Rebel Sim II on HTC Smart problems

I've just got a new HTC Smart which is locked to O2. I also got a Rebel Sim II which is supposed to be a simple plug and play to unlock the phone as I'm on Three but I've followed the YouTube videos but the phone won't even let me access any menus let alone be able to make calls. Has anyone had any experience with these things?
