I'm looking for a way of using my phone to record placemarks ... i.e. to pinpoint a position on a map and record that location together with a brief description. I know that I can use "My Maps" within Google Maps on my PC to record placemarks and that I can see the resulting data on my phone using "Layers". However, I would like to be able to record placemarks when I'm out and about. I understand that Google used to distribute a Map Editor Android app, which sounds as if it did exactly what I want, but it has been withdrawn.

I can't see how to customise the name of a Starred Place.
Nor can I see how to delete one.

What I really want to be able to do is to add new placemarks to existing My Maps sets (and even create new sets) on the phone and to have the freedom to edit them (rename them, delete them, copy or move them from one set to another) on the phone.

I suppose the minimum requirement is to be able to create a placemark on the phone (perhaps in the form of a Starred Place) and then access it on the PC and move it into a My Maps set. Perhaps this is already possible, but if so I can't see how to do it.

Google My Tracks will do this I think.

I think Catch Notes from the market as reviewed in Appbrain is what you are looking for ---- record notes, pics, etc with location per the review.

I've tried Catch Notes and My Tracks. They both seem to be excellent apps, but I'm not sure they do exactly what I need.

Catch Notes seems to store location information internally (it is able to display on a map those notes which have position tags), but I can't see how to export the location information for use outside the program. If I export notes to the SD card or if I "share" a note via email only the text seems to be exported.

My Tracks seems better in this respect. Although the "Send to ... Google My Maps" feature seems to be broken (with the "deprecation" of Google's Android Maps Editor), it is possible to "Share" a track via email in the form of a kml file which can be imported into My Maps (on a PC).

However, I can't see how, in either program, to create a placemark (or note or marker or waypoint) at any point other than the current location. What I want to be able to do is stand in a street, look over the road or down to the other end of the street at a place of interest, locate it on the map and create a placemark there.

    Have I overlooked anything relevant?

    Hi there Prepbgg...

Did you ever find a solution to using your android phone to put a placemark onto a google map? I want to do it to show my friends where I have got to on a bicycle tour this summer, but I just cannot find a way to do it.

Any help would be much appreciated!

For me, I found a solution for this Maps problem: Place Saver :)

The app imports stared places from Maps, then these places can be saved with a description.

Also the actual location can be saved.

And all the saved places can be shown in Maps and shared ...
