So do you have the normal contact data for that person? I'm trying to work out whether this is some error message (which I've never encountered before) or whether it's just their contact photo that is appearing as a red triangle/exclamation mark?

If the latter it's possible that they've actually set that as a contact image in their Gmail/G+ or Facebook (same as I'm using a photo from a British comedy from the 1990s as my image here) and the phone has uploaded it and used it in your contacts app. These phones do that type of thing.

I'm not here real time, just dipping in and out while doing other stuff, so I can easily go quiet for a while without it meaning anything ;)

On my phone the way I'd change a contact pic would be to view the contact then tap on the picture - I have a little icon in the bottom corner of the picture if I do that, but it may be different on yours because different manufacturers do different things with their contacts apps.

My Android ultra won't let me tap pic to change. Mine only pops up " join" or. " dicard"

Interesting. And this is while looking at the specific contact (rather than the list)?

"Join" could mean that it thinks this contact is a duplicate and is offering to merge them?

Unfortunately I have to go offline for the night now ('tis midnight where I am). Hopefully someone else will have an idea.

Here's the user manual pdf for (what I believe to be) your device.
Go to page 29 for contacts, perhaps this may be of help:

I'm wondering if the red triangle is actually in the messaging app or in the contacts app. If it's in the messaging it probably means there is a message somewhere in that persons thread that failed to send.

That's exactly what it means..the message you tried to send fail due to an error server or connectivity issue..if you press the triangle the message is gonna try to be sent again, let me know..
