I tried searching for this info, but every search ive done gives me links to Droid X or Incredible directions. Dont know if the method is the same.

When I originally rooted my phone (I had 2.1 at the time), I was able to remove all the bloatware i didnt want by going into Root Explorer and changing each application's file extension from .apk to .bak.

Now, with Froyo, I tried to do the same thing, but the only apps that show up in /data/app are the ones that I have installed off the market.

Am I looking in the correct directory? How do I go about removing all this crap in Froyo?

Personally I use Titanium Backup for this.
It will bring up you currently installed apps, click on an app and there is an 'uninstall' button. Naturally you need to be careful not to uninstall something the system needs to run, but it's a very simple process.

Well...I kinda liked the renaming approach because nothing was actually "removed". Takes the risk out of it by being able to enable something again if necessary.

is there a similar option still available for Froyo?

in the paid version of Titanium you could "freeze" it so removes if from being seen, but does not delete it and a little easier than renaming to .bak

But is renaming even an option in Froyo? As I said above, I can't seem to find the files, let alone rename them. They were easy to pick out in 2.1, but don't even appear in the list in 2.2.

I would prefer to not have to pay for Titanium Backup when the free version seems to cover my other needs.

Yes you can use Root Explorer to do this on Froyo. The files your looking for are in system>app

Be careful in there and do not changed something unless you know what it is.
