Help Restarting Issue/ What I've done so far, with no results.

Hi. I just posted this on the Google boards as well.

Device:Nexus One
Carrier:Unlocked, Using Rogers Sim Card
Country / Language:Canada/English
OS / Browser / build number (if applicable):Android(Stock), Browser (Stock), 2.2.2/FRG83G

Let me start by saying I bought the phone, unlocked, from Ebay July 2010. (Before Rogers carried any top-end Android devices) If I'm not mistaken, it is the T-Mobile version, the one that supports the 850MHz band for 3G within Canada. (It works)

Over the last couple of months I have had nothing but trouble with the device.
It randomly restarts as many reports here have suggested.

- After a lot of research into the issue, I narrowed it down to the data connection.
- When the data connection is OFF, everything works perfectly. (Wifi as well)
- It seems to have started ever since the release of 2.2.1.
- Widgets like Facebook and Twitter work just fine, but browsing and maps, for example, tend to cause a restart within a minute, sometimes seconds.

Trying to solve the issue:

- Turning off the data connection. (Not very feasible, understandably)
- I thought the new 2.2.2 release would solve the issues, but it hasn't.
- Apps - I have deleted every app I acquired through the market. For stock apps like FB, maps, etc. I have uninstalled updates and moved back to the first versions, but the issue prevails.
- Finally, I have seen this mentioned on these boards. Sim Card issue. My sim card is nearly 5 years old. It works properly on my 6 other Nokia devices, my brother's two blackberry devices and an old Samsung I have lying around.
- I'm out of town writing this so I plan on trying to get a replacement when I get back. But will Rogers give it to me considering the current one still works and the Nexus One is not from them.

So I think I've covered a sufficient amount of information highlighting the two main probable causes. Is there anything you experts can suggest?

I bought the phone from a store on Ebay and I'm not sure replacements will work well.

I truly hope someone can help. It is ridiculous considering you spend some $700 on a phone and you have to deal with these issues. I moved away from Nokia for a reason, but I'm regretting it at the moment.

Note: I have never rooted a phone and I am hoping I don't have to.

Replacing the sim card will be done at customer request (for free or pay'd) ,this is not a concern ...abut the random restarts ,if you have a warranty ,get it checked for any problems it might have !
If the warranty/check turns out to be ok ,root it and install one of the stable custom ROM's out there !

Yeah, I don't have any warranty on the device, unfortunately. I am on my way back home at the moment. I'll give the SIM card change a try.

I know the possibility of a hardware problem does exist, but I have babied this phone since day 1. In addition, as mentioned already, this was working perfectly fine under 2.2.

If the SIM card change doesn't work, I'm probably going to root and install one of the Custom ROMS out there. If the problem still exists, I guess it's bye bye Nexus One. Probably end up going for one of the locked, branded phones that Rogers gives out.

It reboots. The bottom of the phone does get warm. But NOT unbearably hot.

I spoke with HTC who noted the problem and asked me to speak with the warranty guys. I haven't done that as yet though.

I did however head down to Rogers earlier today and picked up a new SIM card.

It does seem to have improved a bit, but with a lot of data usage it did reboot once. The phone however was slightly warm at the bottom. (Ex. I played a good 8-9 minutes of a youtube video on the YT app after which is rebooted.)

I'm holding onto this for a couple of days to see whether there is any improvement at all, after which I'm probably going to contact the warranty guys.

Oh, the person I spoke to from HTC recommended I do yet another hard reset before calling those guys. I did one, but the problem persisted. This was before I got the new SIM card.

I have had this problem off and on too and until now attributed it to the phone over-heating and the phone rebooting as a fail-safe. Google Earth is always the worst so I installed it tonight to experiment.

While running Google Earth on WIFI the phone would warm up as usual and occasionally the Earth program would restart itself, something was crashing it. Now within ten seconds after switching the data to 3G(Bell) the phone reboots! Now is the app crash on WIFI translating to reboot while on 3G?

So yes something about the 3G connection and taxing applications are causing our phones to reboot. There is a built in logging application logcat that we might get some more information from. If I get some time this weekend I'll see if reveals anything.

Well I can rule out that the SIM card was the main culprit. I've experienced reboots on the new SIM card as well.

Like you, the reboot problem is only happening when the 3G data connection is enabled. On WiFi I haven't experienced any program crashes.

That said, with the new SIM card there has been a 'slight' improvement, but that is probably because my previous SIM card was nearly 6 years old.
