returning phone due to Froyo

what does personal responsibility have to do with this?

let's recap:

1) I have a fully functional phone that is working fine
2) Verizon tells me that it needs to be updated. it keeps telling me this every half hour until I accept it
3) after the update my phone battery drains much faster and charges slower

and somehow this is my fault? I didn't go out of my way to root some rom. I didn't step out of line and use the RUU. I just did exactly what Verizon told/forced me to do.

and now my phone is worse for it and I have to spend time trying to fix it. this has nothing to do with personal responsibility, it has to do with releasing and forcing out a flawed update to thousands of people

I agree with most of what you said, with the exception of that last part. It seems that MOST people are receiving updates and having very few problems. But there are SOME cases where the update went buggy.

Dude just get off the internet and storm into a store, they may be able to fix it on the spot, or activate a new one for you.

The more you post, the more people are bashing you, the more pissed im getting, ill end up jumping in to defend you and getting into flaming wars, and both you and I will end up banned.

So do us both a favor, stop posting and just go to VZW lol

And I'll say it once again...

In the amount of time you have spent creating this thread and replying to posts complaining about how the man is keeping you down, you could've fixed your phone (without wasting gas and time going to Verizon's store, which probably won't have a replacement anyway).

Just food for thought.

Food for thought...there are lots of people who don't have a clue what a ROM is or how to "flash one", and would never think to even consider that an option. Its probably easier to be helpful and explain to this OP HOW to fix their phone than just yelling at them for being stupid and naive. Sure maybe its annoying, but not everyone is tech savvy, and most are far from it. At least give the link the the appropriate thread.

I agree. Rooting isn't illegal, and doing the RUU isn't either. What is the problem with you phone? What EXACTLY isn't working? Most people create a post on a forum looking for help. You have simply stated, well overstated at this point, that you are angry at Verizon. Thats fine, I'm sure every person here has had some beef with VZW (i know i have). So get over it and ask for help.

What is wrong with your phone, someone can help it get fixed or give you advice on what to actually do other than bitch at VZW who, frankly, will very polite tell you that you are SOL.

Joe 6 Pack shouldnt have to figure what is wrong and troubleshoot a brand new update. it should just work.

But you're saying that apples stuff just works, that's not true.

who cares? the phone worked the same way either way, it was just a display issue. the user experience was not effected by this

Lots of iPhone users cared. Some accursed Apple of dicking with the bars to it's benefit back when and now were doing an about face when they needed to.

ok, but the 3 party dance of Android/Hardware Makers with custom builds/Operators is leaving a lot to desire. the whole thing makes the Apple model look a whole lot better

You are free to drink the apple kool-aid. I'm sure they'd be more than happy to take more money.

I would, if he seemed interested in it at all. I have no problem explaining things to people. This is why I have written several dozen how-to guides (not on here), am a moderator of 3 different active forums, have 35,000+ posts on forums that I actively participate in, and love tech support sections to death.

But he seems hell bent to take it to Verizon and make them deal with it. If he would show some interest in the more sensible and self-improving alternative, I would show him. It's all about attitude and a willingness.

I have no idea. But I'm far from alone, many people are reporting problems.

yes, Apple effed up the antenna. but it was a rare mistep from them, I have never seen them put out a software update that effed up so many people. their stuff just works.

I dunno I still can't get their "Homeshare" to work, and they have no answer for me on how to fix it. Who knows how many updates later and it still don't work. :p

So far my phone has been working excellently. I've done all kind of things to it. s-off, rooted, custom roms, back to stock, update, and it's still a happy camper. Well except when I tried to remove facebook. Will never do that again. That was my fault though not Verizons, I knew better.

But he's right. If he doesn't want to do all that to his phone and just want's it to work it should. He should not have to worry about resets after updates, or rooting for a custom rom that works. It should work the way Verizon, and HTC intended it to work when he bought it. I'm just sorry that he has to feel this way about the Incredible because of his experience with it.

I have the same feelings about Motorola and Samsung now after similar experiences with those phones. Tho' Samsung was partly Sprint's oh so wonderful system. Motorola was a kick in the pants I feel. The worst experience ever with a cell phone yet. Sad to watch your phone die day by day, and pray your new phone makes it to you before the Moto completely goes. The Moto did basicly die the night before my Incredible arrived. :(

It is a new update and if it messed up his phone they should replace it for him simple as that.

For the most part, I don't disagree. My point is simply this. A long time ago I took it upon myself to not depend on some tech support people to fix things for me. I do all my own repairs and am happier (also richer) for it. Self help is awesome, and is what I'm trying to promote.

The gas he is wasting going to Verizon (who probably won't be able to fix it on the spot or will look at him with those deer-in-headlights looks) and the time lost in his life creating and posting in this thread could've been used for other things. The time could've been used to fix it, and the gas could've been used for the next beer run.

Point is, you don't have infinite supply of either (time or resources) and learning to do it yourself and take matters into your own hands makes sure you have more of it in the future.

I agree with you, but nonethless he hasn't proved that it isn't something he did. The OP hasn't stated what is actually wrong with his phone. An OTA killed my Omnia one time, I was furious. But before taking it to Verizon I troubleshooted what I did and found out it was my error. I had no idea I had made that error but it happened nonetheless. That OTA legit bricked my phone, slow charge and quick battery drain? Welcome to the Incredible, those are known issues (the battery drain anyway). 2.2 is a faster OS, and the slow charge is an attempt to fix the bump charge issue.

the people who bother to come here and post about Android are far savvier than the general population. if even this group of people has a lack of understanding, well, that's a serious problem. android is never going to become dominant if only the geekiest of geeks know what is doing on.

I have news for you iphone users do the same thing with their phones. I got a cousin and some friends with iphones. They call it "Jailbreaking" the phone. Just so they can customize it.

You know I still don't get it. My phone has always take 4 hours from dead to charge just like the tag on the cable states. I always get up to 20 to 29 hours from my phone. I love watching my youtube on it too, most of my use time is that. Now I have setcpu and with that set to minimum when my display is off I get more like 39 hours from my phone on a charge. Maybe I just got lucky.

LOL! I have to laugh at your description of a Verizon rep.
Either way it's his choice.

I think this personality type suggests he'd be happier with an iPhone. Nothing wrong with that, honestly.

i think sabrewings is right, do it yourself and stop complaining about Verizon. i learned to troubleshoot, i learned to research, i learned every inch about my phone, i learned to root, i learned to replace a shattered digitizer. guess how much money/gas i used...0. guess what, when something goes wrong, it gets fixed.

I have this forum to thank for that, so do what a forum member does and post something with every intention of seeking advice/support instead of complaining and ranting.

agreed. makewayhomer, ask to downgrade to a regular phone that doesnt have an OTA, deal with not having a smartphone for the time being (im not sure its the phone for you anyway) and then upgrade to a VeriPhone if it comes out in the new year.

If he is not as tech capable as you or other people are and gives fixing this a shot, and ends up toasting his device. What does he tell VZW? Then his chances of a replacement are shot because any warranty would be voided most likely.

Im not going to debate the topic, in fact i have to unsubscribe so i don't follow it any more as i clearly have a different opinion on what our expectations from large companies should be after spending good money on one of their products, and i can see where it is leading here.

So with that, i bid you good day sir :)

Let me briefly explain why everyone really should learn how to troubleshoot their own problems.

Going to a Verizon Store requires time and money (transportation / lost time). Once you get there, 97.6% of the time, the person who is a "Technical Specialist" knows little more than your average person, and generally far less than the members of this forum. They will take the phone and ask you to repeat your problem. If you can't, they send you on your un-merry way. If you can, they will look at it dumbfounded and tell you they can factory reset it for you. If that doesn't reproduce the problem in front of them, they will send you on your un-merry way. If the problem does persist, you might get offered a refurbished replacement or more attempts at troubleshooting.

It is a long and painful process, and often gets you nowhere.

If it was as simple as walking into the store, saying "my phone doesn't work as I expected" and being handed a new phone, most companies would be bankrupt.

I'm not saying problems should exist. I can't stand the fact that they do myself. I hate incompetence and I hate products that don't perform almost perfectly. I love Android, but the force quits, random reboots, and other issues that come with being able to do so much self-customization piss me off. That is, however, the sacrifice we make to use technology.

Before you start blaming a company for a bad update, remember that they didn't have to give you 2.2 in the first place. VZW could've just said "screw it, we have their money, we don't care about 2.2". The phone worked as it was.

I'd rather companies keep trying and live through the few side effects than not have updates to products at all.

How do you know the people who complained about it being so slow to release are the same ones complaining about it being released and "sucking"? I personally have been excited to get it (have not yet), but have not said anything on this forum about "WAAAAAAAAH WHERE IS IT?!?!" but I can guarantee i'll probably be like the OP if I do get it and it causes more problems than it solves. Speaking of whining, why whine about people whining...that seems counter-productive.

You took that awfully personally...

I was speaking in generals. No names mentioned. No one. Hell, I didn't even hint that I was talking about a specific person.

IN FACT, I clearly said "people in general".

I am just saying... for months we have been reading posts whining about not having Froyo yet. Once it was "official", we started having people whining that they have not yet received the OTA even though they knew it was a random roll out over at least 2 weeks.

And now... we have a ton of threads bitching and complaining that 2.2 is the most horrible thing to ever happen to their phone

The only thing that truly bugs me about the OP's post is that it was nothing but slander and whining. No mention of specific problems or any sort of details. He wasn't here asking for help. He just wanted to complain. And then he goes and gives us the ever so typical Apply Fanboy crap of "Apple would never do this to us!!" (conveniently ignoring the hundred times that they HAVE done this exact same thing but on a larger level).
