I am among the unlucky few to have suffered through a lemon EVO. Unfortunately I'm a slow learner so it took me 3 months to finally get a replacement. Only after getting my new EVO do I now realize what a piece of junk my old one was. Among my problems were:
The tech at the Sprint store attempted a repair but in the end they replaced it with a refurbished EVO (at a cost of $35). I wasn't too happy about replacing my 3 month old phone with a refurb, but it looked brand new and obviously is performing great for me, so who cares. I can't believe I was about ready to ditch the EVO, Android, and Sprint all together, but my new EVO has given me a second chance. It's only been a week now, but so far so good.
Anyway, if anybody is still reading I'm not posting this to simply moan and complain. Maybe this will save some fellow owner the frustration of endless hours of fruitless troubleshooting, and realize sometimes a lemon is just a lemon.
- Screen freezing while charging. The touchscreen would often (but erratically) become unresponsive while my EVO was charging. Eventually this became more and more severe and finally the screen ended up being almost completely unresponsive even when not charging. At this point I finally went in for replacement.
- Earpiece buzzing. My old EVO sounded terrible, sometimes I couldn't even understand the person on the line due to the buzzing. My research found many similar complaints, so I never was quite sure if all EVOs were like this or just mine. Much to my delight the earpiece of my new EVO is crystal clear so my old earpiece was indeed defective.
- Slow data speeds. Before I got my new EVO, I thought my slow data speeds were due simply to a crappy Sprint network, I never would have guessed the problem to be my phone itself. My old 4G connection was terrible, I would only ever get 0-1 bars of 4G signal, and the data speeds were oftentimes worse than 3G. Even 3G speeds were bad, often below 100kbps. My new phone has no problems with either 3G or 4G, and I usually have 2 bars of 4G service instead of 0-1 bar. 4G gets me a consistent 3000kbps, a far cry from my old phone.
- 4G lag. May be related to above issue. My old EVO would barely chug along when I turned on 4G. Sluggish scrolling, zooming, etc. This combined with the above, and I really never even used 4G.
- Light leakage. My old EVO had this but it was certainly the least of my problems. No leakage with the new EVO.
