RF Detector Feasability

Im looking for some information to see whether a mobile phone app can be developed to act as a RF detector to receive signals and locate other mobile phone devices that are transmitting nearby in the uplink bands.

If so there is a huge market for the location of handsets such as schools, call centres, Jails etc and even for entertainment.

Since the receive and transmit frequencies are so far apart, no. Even if you could, the range would probably be limited to a few inches at best because the receiver would be virtually deaf at the transmit frequency. And, since you couldn't decode the signal you received, it would be pretty worthless. About ll you could tell is that there was a cellphone near you - which is pretty much always true anywhere there's civilization.

For entertainment, there are Bluetooth "walky talky" apps, although a wifi walky talky would have greater range (a few hundred feet).
