you can get free ringtones through the app market.

to set the ringtones simply go to settings -> sound
in there you will see the call ringtone and notification ringtone.

Yes, I was able to use these to set the default ringtone for calls and for notifications. However, my question is how do I set the ringtone for voicemail alerts ONLY? aTdHvAaNnKcSe!

    Try this:

From the app list tap "Voicemail". Tap the menu button and choose settings.

I did try that too. There is no menu for Voicemail from the app list.
