While we understand that because of RAM/ROM limitations Android 2.0/2.1 may not be possible for the dream, Donut (andoid 1.6) is certainly possible.

T-mobile G1 has the same specs as the dream and has been upgraded to Android 1.6 beginning late October.

HTC/Rogers must explain the reasons they are not willing to perform the update to Donut (Android1.6)

    wlewin: we request some clarifications!

    @Boualem: You previously said

That is exactly what we're getting now. If the choice (because of cost?) was between getting 1.6 now, and no future updates, I'd rather wait a while to get 2.1, and maybe root my phone in the mean time to have 1.6 until then.

    Divide and conquer strategy:
make some users happy while leaving others in the status quo

It's the recession (Spend half the money required):
It seems that rogers is willing to spend half the money required to update all of its Android phone owners.

Maybe HTC and Rogers can negotiate some more updating all users.

As a Magic owner, I'm happy to wait for the 2.1 (Android Eclair).

I just want Rogers to update Dream owners to 1.6

@boualem, you are right, they need to do something for Dream owners, and I don't plan to let up on them until they do.

    Options could include:

    1. Offer 1.6 to Dream owners.
    2. An official "root" method to switch from the Rogers ROM to a generic ROM?
    3. Allow Dream owners to exchange for a Magic or an iPhone, since prices and features are equivalent.

This is awesome news for us Magic owners.. Well pretty awesome, sucks that we will probably be waiting 6 months to get past Android 1.5 now, but at least we are in the support chain again!

As for Dream owners, I disagree that allowing them to swap for Magic's is the right fix. They bought Dreams for a reason, they wanted the hardware keyboard, so switching to the Magic takes that away from them. I think the correct solution to them, is to give them their 1.6!

It will be good to hear from some HTC Dream owners... about:
    - what they want from Rogers/HTC.
    - Further actions

    Note:
    - The legal course is still available/possible.
    - The case has merit!

New member - been reading and following this for a few weeks.
Had bought a Rogers Dream for use on AT&T and quickly re-sold it once I found your info.

    Now, to answer HTC's response...

It would be nice to get an official release with this info from someone at rogers, and a firm date as to WHEN 2.1 will be released to the magic smartphones....

@porky1981: This info from HTC was confirmed to me personally by RogersMary, and I received the information directly from HTC via email, as RogersMary directed them to do.

As for a date, we'll have to see what other info we can get.

A big thanks to mjschmidt and GBD for their efforts in leading this fight! As the messages slowed down after Christmas and nothing new was being said by HTC or Rogers beyond the standard we had been getting, my optimism was turning to pessisism...
I think this shows what the right kind of pressure can do even if it is from a relatively small but vocal community!

    Thanks again!

    Come on Rogers
    Come on HTC
    be nice

    You can do it
    Stop this vice
    Here is some free advice

Rogers pays for the Android Magic upgrade
HTC pays for the Android Dream upgrade price
And this my friends shall suffice
all HTC/Rogers customers to be happy with their device

    I'm an HTC magic owner.
I've been following this thread for weeks wondering how thing would go.

I'm very happy with the promised upgrades. This is really great news!
Many thanks to everyone in this forum.
Special thanks to those who have lead this effort.

Thank you to Rogers and HTC for making this happen.
Special thanks to @rogerMary and other htc staff who helped shape this decision.

    However,
As mentioned earlier by other we need the dream update.
The "I want my one point 6" is more true than ever for the HTC dream owners.

GBD and other dream owners don't accept this as "Fait accompli".
Go back to the OofP, HTC, etc.

    Well......

Was away on holidays whole this was going on and came back to what i feal is a win for magic users which is great for them!!!

But this is a kick in the teeth for Dream owners!!!!

Rogers/HTC needs to come up with a solution for the unhappy Dream owners cause this is not it!!

Dream owners are left to rot.... Rogers/HTC need to come up with a better solution then this i am actually suprised that they would make this announcement fully knowing they have more a less left the Dream Users without any chance of support or compensation for the companies mistakes with this hardware.

I think i am much more angry then before .......is this the best Rogers and HTC could come up with......just terrible....

This not a answer to the HTC Dream problem and time to get the media more involved in this......They have opened a new can of worms....

Only the Google branded devices use over the air (OTA) updating. When this update comes out it will be posted on probably both the Rogers and HTC sites. I'm not sure how Rogers and HTC intend to let people know that the updates are available, maybe that's a question that @RogersMary could answer. My recommendation to them would be that customers that are looking for the update register their email address with Rogers so that they can get an link to the download and instructions sent to them via email. It would also be nice if they could offer some sort of update service for the less tech savvy customers that are not comfortable doing the update themselves.

I was in contact with a HTC representative a couple of days before Christmas. It was an employee at a fairly high level who started to state that their helpdesk should keep quiet about updates, that they would be reminded of that, and then wrote:
    • HTC is finnishing a major update for HTC Magic
    • The update will hit the customers in days rather than months
It was also said by this person that software updates were hopefully regarded as an extra service by us, the customers. It seemed that that was HTC view on updates.

What kind of update it was, they didn

Hmm... sorry to appear pessimistic but I have a feeling we will still be waiting for this apparent update, three months from now.

After everything I read about the latest Android updates, even the latest Nexus phone... I see little (or enough) improvements that make me excited about any updates offered by Rogers. It's great that they are 'listening' and offering a 2.x update for the Magic (not so much for Dream owners), but keep in mind that this is the LAST update you will likely get!

Many of us still have another two years with our Rogers contracts and in that time, our Android phones will have become long-ago obsolete!

To be fair, this situation is more the fault of Google than it is Rogers. I only hold Rogers accountable for misleading me (us) by stating that the phone would have regular updates, just like the iPhone. Had I known the truth, I would never have purchased the Android on a three year contract. That is why I still want out!

Ok, not going to give up the fight! I've got a new post on my blog, including my reply to the email I received from HTC's PR company (the same info they posted in the forums and on blogs).

Here is the email I sent to HTC & Rogers in reply to HTC.
    ------------------------

    Dear Ms. Goldstein,

Thank you for the information regarding HTC's plans for the Android operating system on the Rogers HTC Magic and Dream phones. Obviously Magic owners are thrilled with this information, however if you have been watching the forums and blog you will know that Dream owners feel betrayed and insulted that they have been offered nothing. Minor updates to Android 1.5 are not enough for Dream owners, and we do not intend to give up our public shaming of HTC and Rogers until something more is done for them.

I don't know how familiar you are with the specifics of the issue, and I imagine anything I have to say in this letter will be passed by you on to those at HTC who will compose any actual answer, but I will try to summarize what we in the user community know to be true about the Rogers HTC Dream.

We know that Android 1.5 for the Rogers HTC Dream was customized for Rogers (at their request) both to include Rogers branding, to work with Microsoft Exchange, and (apparently) to work specifically on the Rogers network. We also know that in order to provide an update to Android 1.6 or above would require the same, or similar customization.

We have been told by you, by representatives of HTC, and by representatives of Rogers that the HTC Dream hardware is incapable of being upgraded to 2.1, however we know for a fact that the HTC Dream is capable of running Android 1.6, and potentially even Android 2.0. There are users who have already "rooted" (hacked) their Rogers HTC Dream phones to run Android 1.6, and there are reports that some users have managed to install Android 2.0 on the HTC G1, which is similar hardware to the HTC Dream.

Given that we know Android 1.6 will work on the Rogers HTC Dream, and given that HTC and Rogers have agreed to offer Android 2.1 for the Magic, but not 1.6 for the Dream, many people are speculating that this is a cost issue, and that the truth it that either Rogers or HTC is unwilling to commit the capital required to customize 1.6 to work for the Dream. It is speculated that instead the decision was made to pay for only one update, that being to 2.1 for the HTC Magic. As a community we would like HTC to officially clarify this issue. Specifically, would Rogers have to pay for any updates offered to Rogers Android phones, and would it be necessary to pay extra for an update to 1.6 for HTC Dream owners?

Again, to be clear, we know that Android 1.6 works on the Rogers HTC Dream, so please don't try to assuage us by telling us that it is a "hardware issue". We accept that it might be impossible to provide Android 2.1 for the Rogers HTC Dream, but Android 1.6 should not be a problem.

We believe strongly that this issue is a special case in Canada, because unlike in the United States, the Rogers HTC Dream and Magic debuted at the same time. As a result many buyers were under the impression (since the Android operating system on both phones looked and behaved almost identically) that the only real difference between the two was the hardware keyboard of the Dream. Furthermore, many Rogers customers were told at the time of purchase that they would be able to get the Android 1.6 update for both phones. This was happening as recently as Christmas Even to me, and I am looking into a report by one of the visitors to my blog that a customer was told only just the other day that the Rogers HTC Dream would be updated to 2.1! As a result of the misinformation, as well as the perception of similarity between the two phones because of their simultaneous debut, buyers had confidence they would get a phone that would be updated when they bought the Dream. If they had known the truth then (in fact, if Rogers employees had understood themselves and provided correct information) surely the majority of Dream buyers would have NOT purchased a Dream, but a Rogers HTC Magic instead.

As a result of this misleading debut, and the misinformation provided by Rogers employees (including as high as the office of the president) there are now Dream owners who will never be able to enjoy the benefits of Android 1.6, including increased functionality and access to applications in the Market that require Android 1.6 to run. In fact, as application developers create new versions of their applications to work with 1.6, if they are unable or unwilling to make the application backwards compatible to Android 1.5, the older version of their app will disappear from the store. This has already happened! There are now apps missing from the store that used to be available for owners of Android 1.5 devices.

I hope you will be able to pass along this letter to someone at HTC who will be able to accurately and truthfully answer the questions I have posed above. If HTC hopes for Rogers HTC Dream owners to accept this decision (something highly unlikely to happen) they will need to do a much better job of explaining their reasoning, because as a group we are a tech-savvy bunch, and we already know the truth about the capabilities of the HTC Dream hardware.

I am CCing this email to Rogers management, as well as Jason Mackenzie of HTC. I will be posting the content of this email on my blog at I Want My One Point Six - Demanding Android 1.6 for our Rogers HTC Magic & Dream, and LG Eve Phones and mentioning it on Twitter. As I've said, while we are very pleased that HTC and Rogers have done the right thing for Magic owners, they have miserably failed where Rogers HTC Dream owners are concerned and have, effectively, treated them as "second class citizens" which has created horrible repercussions for the HTC and Rogers brands in Canada.

    Yours truly,

    Michael J. Schmidt

    @mjschmidt:
    -Any progress on this...

    @rogersMary and HTC:
    - Is the offer final? or could we expect better for HTC dream owners?
    - Is 2.1 the end of the upgrade for the HTC Magic

    @GBD and other dream users:
    - Where you able to strike a deal for your dream: upgrade to HTC Magic or Iphone or contract termination?
