I truly believe that's the reason that you can't purchase phones directly from the manufactures. That way they can wipe their hands of it and leave it to the wireless providers to provide all the support for the handsets.

"It's not my customer, you look after it" sort of thing.

And when I don't get proper service at my "Dealership" I'll contact the manufacture directly.

@GBD: I haven't received an answer yet to my last email from Jessika at HTC. I haven't tried contacting them via Twitter.

Strangely, I don't seem to be getting any responses from @RogersMary either, and I've sent a few, both direct and public.

GBD you are 100% correct. I had not contacted HTC directly because by the time I was mad enough at rogers multiple people in this forum had contacted HTC directly and to be honest I didn't see the point.

To use my car dealership analogy further. If I was not happy about the quality of the break pads that were installed on my car during manufacturing then it is a bit of a toss up as to where I will get the most bang for my complaining buck. I think that the best way is to get several people to complain to the dealership then get the dealership to lean on Dodge. I know this to be true because I used to write software for a now defunct telecommunications company (who's former name rhymes with whoretel). If a single customer complained that the voice mail didn't work the way that they wanted we would tell them to push off, but if bell or telus came to us and wanted the same change we would damn near break a leg running to the source code to make the change.

You are completely free to complain to whom you want to, I just feel the best bang for the buck is to lean on rogers and let rogers lean on HTC. just my opinion, but as we all know opinions are like butt holes, everyone has one :D

@mjschmidt (or anybody else who was in contact with HTC) can you ask your contact at HTC what exactly does the "rogers customization" mean?

    I'm really curious.

    @gnugu:

Not sure if they'd answer that. Probably site trade secrets or something. The woman with whom I've been corresponding works for the Marketing/PR firm hired by HTC. I doubt she even really understands Android. (She probably has an iPhone!).

From everything I've seen so far, though, I'd hazzard a guess it involves the following:

    1. Rogers branding (icons, and logo)
    2. MS Exchange email
    3. (according to HTC and Rogers) Ability to "work" on Rogers network properly. Whatever that means.

What it _actually_ means I couldn't say. That's just what I've seen HTC spew from time to time.

@mjschmidt I have been attempting to get a hold of RogersMary all day. She promised to get back to me today with something. I am not sure exatly what she meant by that but she said she would at least msg me today. I have been pestering Rogers quite consistantly. Awaiting to hear options on what I can do with my Dream...

True, but eventually they will probably stop sending out iPhone updates, and Rogers will let you upgrade in 18 months, assuming you extend another 1 1/2 years to bring you contract back to 3 years.

I was told the same thing when I bought my Magic. I actually explained to the sales guy that from what I knew at the time, the battery life was better on the Magic (don't know if that was actually the case, but I had read it), he had no idea, thought they were the same.

My guess is that the G1 probably won't go past 1.6 either, so they should at least be offering that to Dream users.

I would assume it will take a few days to get a response from mary in regards to this .....as we know she is just the messenger and is problay awaiting word from the higher ups on how to address this now.

All we can do is keep firing our emails and phone calls off till we here from her or another official statement comes around.

I started "The Dream Team" Twitter Group http://tgr.me/g/onepointsix, stop by and visit us and join if you like. If you don't want to join please mention us in your tweets about 1.6, add the following to your tweet if you have the space #onepointsix

    Thanks

Should also mention that our brothers and sisters that are stuck on 1.5 with the LG Eve are just as welcome as are sympathetic magic owners. If you know anybody that got stuck with a Samsung Galaxy from Bell, let them know about us as well.

Hi Folks. As promised, I'm here to provide you with some more information :)

It's great to hear that everyone is pleased by HTC's agreement to upgrade Magic to 2.1. We pushed hard on your behalf and are pleased with that part. When it comes to Dream, we share in your frustration that the device does not have the required on-board memory for an upgrade. We've reviewed this internally and believe that Dream users should be able to have the same HTC Android experience as those who purchased the Magic. So, we are offering our HTC Dream customers a limited time opportunity to upgrade from their current HTC Dream device to the HTC Magic.

We're working on finalizing the details of that promotion now but wanted to let you know the great news as soon as possible. Please be patient as this is not yet available in-store, online or through customer care. I will be back next week to provide you with more information. ‬

    Stay tuned!
    @RogersMary

    @RogersMary

Thanks to you and your team for all the hard work on our behalf. It shows good corporate responsibility for Rogers Wireless to step up to the plate like this and I want you know that it is appreciated. I will do my part to make sure the information about what Rogers Wireless has done for it customers gets out to the various blogs on the net.

Again thanks for your dedication to your customers.

Wow. It's like the end of one of those wacky college movies where we've foiled the plans of the evil Dean of the school who wanted to kick up out of our frat house to build a shopping mall. Or the end of an episode of Scooby-Doo. ;-)

Thank you to RogersMary for all her hard work. It is nice to know that Rogers actually listens and tries to do what they promise in the "customer service" info.

It's a shame it took so long, and required all this public online shaming, but I have the feeling is the truth is most likely that Rogers just didn't understand Android when they bought these phones from HTC. Now, hopefully, they understand.

    Which brings us to LG.

I am so happy that we've reached a victory for HTC phone owners, but we can't leave our LG brethren out in the Canadian cold. To be honest, the LG Eve is a SWEEEEET-looking phone, and I hear it handles well too. I played with one in-store and I like it. I would REALLY like to get one for my wife... but not if it will also be stuck on 1.5!

To that end, I've officially turned my sights (and sites) on LG. Here is my initial email to LG customer support. Let's hear what they have to say.

(And in the mean time, if RogersMary can get us some info about plans for the LG Eve, that would be much appreciated).

    Email to LG:

My name is Michael Schmidt, and I am part of a large community of Canadian Android users who have been VERY angry about a lack of updates for our Android phones. Very recently we managed to shame Rogers Wireless and HTC into reversing their decision not to provide updates beyond Android 1.5 to the HTC Magic & Dream. As a result, the HTC Dream will now be updated to Android 2.1, and owners of the Dream will be offered an opportunity to exchange their phones for HTC Magics.

We would like to know officially if LG will be providing updates to the Android OS on the Rogers LG Eve above 1.5. We have been focused on HTC all this time, and now that we have a positive outcome in that situation, we are directing our sights and our sites, on LG.

Please let us know what we can expect in terms of OS updates for the Rogers LG Eve.

    Yours truly,

    Michael Schmidt

Hey Mike, have you even been able to find any of the specifications on the LG EVE. The only thing that I have managed to find so far is that it only has 150Mb of RAM. If so that's even less than what's available on the Dream (192Mb).

Yeah I see the same on the Rogers site. Even if it's too little, it would be nice to have an official word on the subject so at least we know where we stand. Right now, LG owners don't seem to be hearing _anything_.

EDIT: Weird. This page http://www.lge.com/ca_en/mobile-phones/all-phones/LG-GW620R.jsp on LG Canada's site says Internal memory is 4GB / 2GB. If you click on the carriers tab, it shows Rogers as the only carrier. I don't see a spec on that page for 150MB Ram or Rom.

They're probably simply referring to the mSD card included.

General consumers would be interested in the amount of space available for pictures/video/music/etc...

That's fantastic news that the dream owners will have an opportunity to exchange for a Magic, thank you for helping to make that right. That's the kind of service we appreciate!

Can't wait to see the new Magic update (1.5+Sense) in early Feb and of course the 2.1 update mid-year, assuming the dates don't slip.

Thank you to mike and all his hard work and everyone else on this forum without everyone this could not happen.

Thank you to mary for helping us deal with this issue and has given me renewed faith about rogers customer care.

I will miss my dream's keyboard but i would rather have a updated phone :)

Thanks you RogersMary and Rogers for getting us these updates. Happy to know that the Dream users wont have to dream of a 2.1 experience.

I'm thrilled to hear that I'm not going to have to yell and scream at someone over the phone to get an exchange for a magic!

The online specs at LG.ca (http://www.lge.com/ca_en/products/documents/56924-1-Specs-LR.pdf) mention the following:

    Memory
    User Memory: 150MB
    Internal Memory: 4GB/2GB
External Memory: 2GB ( Eve supports up to 32GB)

I got a loaner Eve from @RogersMiranda and reviewed it on my site. In a nutshell, I like the experience, the interface and the quickness of Magic better then the Eve. I just wish the Magic also had an FM Radio and a 3.5 mm standard headphone jack! :(
