Rogers is either lying, incompetent, or reckless with the 911 bug.

My point of view; Rogers sold the phones and Rogers sends the bills (for next three years) and they certainly weight a lot more than any amount of blogs and forums when dealing with HTC. Rogers is HTC customer

I'm not attempting to change your pov, I just think your ranting is an absolutely pointless exercise. All the theories being floated as to why the 911 patch was implemented are supposition at best and do nothing to strengthen the relationship between Rogers and the user community. I'm not apologizing for Rogers behavior and I agree that how they communicated the patch could have been better, but that it had to be rolled out can't be disputed.

    jamieownsu,

I cannot understand your point whatsoever! Because we have multiple issues here (in order of occurance):

    1) Rogers misinformed customers about Android 1.6 for the Dream.
    2) RogersMary and the RogersHelps team got us a great offer to apologize (not an issue, but good to mention this happened before the 911 debacle)
    3) Rogers never investigated the issue of the 911 calls back in September, and panicked.
    4) (Your point) Rogers went out of their way to ensure their customers weren't without 911, because the issue really was HTC's to deal with.

I want to comment on the 4th one. If, as you say, it was not Roger's responsibility, what gave them the right to deny access to the network until we do something that we are not obligated by contract to do? Where does it say that Rogers can force an update, not provided Over The Air, and threaten loss of paid services (which you are still obligated to pay) if you don't do an update? Oh, and they fail to mention that, even if it is a warranty repair, you are left without a phone until a new one arrives at the door. And then, you need to take time out of your day to send the other phone back.

Regardless, this is a dark hole in the history of Rogers. The next few weeks will determine the success of Rogers. The doomsday will be seeing if Rogers customers don't have data after February 24th.

Ah, okay, I think I see the misunderstanding.

My post does not make suppositions, rather it points out that logically it must be one of three possibilities given what we know to be true.

Ideally I'd like Rogers to just say "Okay, yes, we did x and we're sorry." Althouh I know that won't happen so the very least I can do is expose it.

Rogers needs to admit they don't understand Android and either get out of the Android game, or train staff (doesn't have to be many of them) to become experts on Android. If we felt we could call Rogers tech support, like iPhone and BB users can, and "press 3 for Android" to talk to someone who knows what he/she is talking about, it would solve a lot of the problems we are having.

At the moment, when we call Rogers, we know more than they do, but we are relying on them to solve the problem.

I would like Rogers to put together a list of acceptable ROMs that they can test, so those of us who don't want the Rogers ROM can root and get our data back with hassle.

And, as for my "ranting" being a pointless exercise, quite frankly it has been my "ranting" and the "ranting" of others here and elsewhere that got us to the point of convincing Rogers and HTC to update our Magics beyond 1.5 and to give Dream owners a Magic for FREE. I'd say that's a pretty significant Return On Investment of time and ranting. ;-)

I don't agree with forcing it, but I understand why they had to, and you should too, and no you don't have to like it; I was more than happy with the OS on my Magic before the 911 issue.

The answer is liability. You see, no matter how much Rogers harasses us with calls, texts and whatnot, there are people out there who simply wouldn't update. Whether it be out of ignorance, defiance, lack of time, lack of caring or whatever, it just wouldn't get done. And it's that situation they simply cannot have, because that is an apocalyptic lawsuit waiting to happen.

Forcing the update is the only way to completely convince any potential court that they did their best to correct the issue that wasn't really even their fault to begin with. Who, really, could have foreseen this? Yes, people keep saying they knew about it in September, but who cares? We'd still be in the same boat, just a few months earlier than now.

If you look at it from their perspective, you have a rock and a hard place. They had to go with the lesser of two evils. Try to understand this.
This will never happen, unfortunately. HTC wouldn't cover custom ROMs under their warranty, not even for a split second would they consider. Consider this desire an impossibility, because it absolutely is.

You're assuming you have all the facts. You don't know what's been discussed behind closed doors with Rogers, HTC, their respective marketing and network engineering departments.

Trying out for a job on The Fifth Estate or 60 Minutes?

They've been selling the iPhone since 2007 and the BlackBerry for over a decade. While I've never been a iPhone user I was one of the first BB 957 customers and vividly remember how piss poor the technical support was. The android is a new platform and there are bound to be growing pangs. If you want rock solid stable then stick to tip/ring/waterpipe.

Why should they? Since you seem to like the car analogy lets stick with that....GM, Ford, etc. doesn't put together a list of after-market parts that can be used with their vehicles. If you install something you take the risk of it screwing up your car. If you don't like that comparison then go back to the iPhone. Sure Rogers customers have access to the full Apple marketplace (something I wish we also had with the android devices) but they make no guarantee that something you buy through that portal is going to work on their network. Spin the wheel and take your chance.

Oh not this bullshit again. How many times would you like to hear that you and the big dog are the hero's of the rogers customer base?? Thank you oh great ones for being the exclusive reason for the dream to magic upgrade and that commitment of future OS's. How can we ever show our complete gratitude for you being the singular force that moved such a rotten company to do the right thing???:rolleyes:

You're not helping in making it seem like Rogers cares about this bug. They probably care about the bug itself. You should quit your job. You're not doing Rogers any favours by sticking around. I suggest find work as a professional name caller.

One thing I've never understood about people who complain about others who post in forums is that no one is forcing them to read the posts.

Those of you who don't like to listen to the "whining" or "complaining" that others of us do... why do you read them then? You chose to click on the link, you chose to read it. No one made you.

You can't read what I've written and then complain about how you hate "listening to me whine".

The truth would seem to be that you like to call people names and perhaps you feel better about yourself by trying to make others feel bad? What other purpose would there be in attacking the person with insults?

I'm certainly not losing any sleep over it, and how you feel about me doesn't change the facts I enumerated in my original post. I'm not speculating about anything, I've only laid out what we know to be true and then asked questions about it.

NEway... I'm not going to stop asking the questions, so if you don't like those questions, or if you don't like me because I ask those questions, or the way I ask them.... don't read my posts, and don't read my blog. I won't mind. :)

Now... time to clean the house before my guests arrive for the Superbowl. I just got me a new big screen TV! :)

Thank goodness I have Cogeco, and not Rogers. ;-)

Last night I tried to make a call to a friend and a Rogers rep picked up. I thought I may have dialed wrong, so I tried again. Same thing! They were/are redirecting calls of "non-updated" phones to make sure the person is aware. There is a report that someone tried to make a 911 call and it too was redirected!

I understand the importance of this issue, but hijacking my calls is excessive! I talked to a tech and they turned off the redirect, but in the process I lost data again. I am on a Donut ROM and easily got my data back on the first day they cut it. I dont think I will be able to get it back easily this time.

Quite frankly I'm tired and frustrated with this whole thing. I'm wishing I got the 3GS back in June now.

Good grief, this is getting crazy. I wondered about 911 being redirected and it just might have happened. Although it is too late now but had they enabled a 911 test number this would all go away. My VoIP service has an E911 test number. In our case it needs to be part of the firmware so that it kicks off the "safety" features of the phone.

Once more I wonder about unlocked and rooted phones. Are they going to redirect me or cut my data? So far I'm fine.

You seem to be on the new radio. Some people think that seems to make the difference.

I'm on a 1.6 ROM with the old radio, so that may be why I got data cut, calls redirected and spammed all the time with SMS and calls.

If this was a 2.1 or even 1.6 update I would have no qualms with installing it. I'm finding it hard to install the "new" ROM that is much less complete than my current setup. Just doesnt make sense to go backwards when I already have the fix they want (and have for months!).

Maybe that's the difference but I don't know. I had my data cut at the original blackout but got it back the first night with a reset. I do however get those annoying calls and texts reminding me that they love me and want me to be safe. :)

I have a Sense'd Rogers Magic too and that works but I still prefer my 1.6. My daughter uses it now since she doesn't need root. But I do and I'd rather have data than voice so if this keeps up I'll ask to go with data only and if that doesn't pan out then I'm leaving. I don't need to be paying this kind of money for crippled service.

bloody f*c*in insane!! woke up this morning , called a friend and got redirected to rogers call center , told him I have the upgrade and my data is back too and the waiting game begins....billing rep...technical support rep...customer service rep... wot the bloody hell is going on! i was being kicked around like a football at the rogers call center. Finally a rep told me to turn off phone and back on again and i wont be redirected...been there done that and GUESS WHAT? back at the rogers call center and this time my data connection is GONE!! This time i didnt even bother speaking to anyone out there im just so pissed off..first they cut out my data and now my phone service too! and not to forget the truck load of sms and phone calls theyve been bombarding me with and not to forget they want me to turn off wifi as well! are they expecting me to pay them for carrying a mortar brick in my hand?? If they really care about customers when why the hell arent they giving us instant upgrades to magic or other phones?? is that not urgent that we have devices that we can use since we are paying money to them for service?

Thats it for Robbers , enough of this crap. I got a pay as you go non-rogers phone and the htc dream is there as it is...if they ever call me and ask me to pay my bill that would be the last call they will ever make!

This company is going to the dogs very soon!!

An XDA user claims he tested making a call to 911 and was redirected to Rogers. He also claims to have the call log.

Oh my, this gets stranger every day. But it does suggest one thing, that they are able to detect something in the radio version that rightly or wrongly is a trigger for the diversion. So far my 1.6 ROM'd phone is not being diverted. Can't say that it won't happen like a rolling blackout because I was getting the robot messages until recently. I know that I don't have an 'unsafe' phone but I can't say the same for everyone else just because they have one of the many ROMs available to us. I have doubts about the HoFo ROM since it is old, unmaintained and based on an Asian Sense ROM. Do yourself a favour and schedule a 911 test to be sure.
(Rogers should make this an easy test but we might be on our own for this since it is the lawyers that trump any actual safety concern. I have no interest in legal recourse but I can understand a business concern where clients are at risk if the cell service is disrupted like this.)

Come April my contract expires and I will be super happy and excited to move off Rogers and go elsewhere.

Oddly enough Wind posted a message on their facebook stating that the following phones are known to work on their network provided they are unlocked (Phone Finder results - GSMArena.com). Magic is one of them and Nexus One will be one once I purchase it in May.

Wind mobile here I come. Enough is enough, with Rogers!

Windy Wind. Its plans are actually so good. I'm now paying 70 for an ok plan. With Wind I can pay 80 for an unlimited plan with all features. That's a much better deal for me. Come, Magic, come. Get rooted. Ahhh no root yet. Well anyways they're gonna be selling N1. That should be good enough.

I just spoke to a Rogers tech about the issues we are having, he informs me that any phones that are NOT updated will eventually be completely blocked from the system and not be able to make or receive ANY calls!

I don't know what this will mean for rooted phones.

WOW , They're pulling the trigger at their own Skull !!. With no replacement phones , no magic upgrade and no way out this will backfire on Rogers terribly. But on the other side its good that they will have to let me out of the contract and I can then take my device to whomever I wish..

See, I can grumble about the update all I want, because eventually I'll be getting a free Magic.

However, for those of you with a Magic, you get nothing. I don't even know what to say to that.

    @Michael

If they do cut off your telephone service, then I would consider contacting the Better Business Bureau, because this is unacceptable.
