I have Motorola's Cliq XT and was able to root it using SuperOneClick 1.6 (NOT 1.9). when i then downloaded ROM Manager, it failed to install, with error "ROM Manager could not be installed on this phone".

can someone help me understand something i might be missing here...? I can't even find Rom Mgr in A Market - i did upload the apk which fails.

    thanks for anyone's help.

Obvious question possibly... Are you sure you are rooted?

Can you download and install, say, Titanium Backup from the Market and get it to run?

    Hope this helps. :D

well, that was my first concern, but i read that if i have the Superuser app visible (which i do, and have had to give another app su permissions), then i am.

i'll try to install that backup, but i don't want to pay for it if i don't need it. is there a free version? i'll check...

yes, it asked for root rights, gained them and installed fine. opened fine...

Certainly sounds like you are rooted if you have SuperUser.

So, you are downloading ROM Manager from the Market and it is refusing to install?

there are 202 results for "rom manager" in the Market, none of which look like the one that's online from clockworkmod - the one (apk) i downloaded from there won't install. i don't know which one to get from Market...

well, that's one that i tried to download and got an "the requested Item could not found" messge - now when i try to install appbrain (i've had it before) i'm getting the same message.

is this because of my v 1.5?

Sorry glennn for asking obvious questions... but does Cyanogen Mod support your handset.?

In other words, is there a custom ROM for your make and model of phone?

I had a quick look here and could not see it:-

I think our postings have crossed. :D

If you could answer my last post it may provide an answer one way or the other.

yes, i have the Cliq XT - it's listed in these devices as "Zeppelin", so i'm downloading a "nightly", but there are no "stable" builds appearing when i click stable.

am i able to install this CM without going through this ROM bit...?

    OK... right. The Motorola Quench.

You can install it without using ROM Manager by downloading it to your SDCard or PC and pasting the .zip file to your SDCard.

Then you need to boot into Recovery and select "Install update from SDCard" and navigate to the update zip and select it.

It will, obviously wipe your phone upon installation. I would also recommend wiping your SDCard and reloading it piecemeal after you have flashed... to prevent any conflicts between your present and new firmware.

There are numerous guides on the web and YouTube that describe, step-by-step, how to do this.

A good place to look would be in the Rooting section of your handsets forum, here:-

I hope this has helped you. :D

ok, great - last couple of questions:

    1) this is essentially installing Android 2.*, right? for all intents and purposes?

    2) boot into Recovery how? holding Home down on boot, or...?

    many thanks

:) - thanks, sir - i was looking through these forums; i'll read this and let you know how things went. if you don't hear back from me, that means i've bricked it and committed suicide.

It's very hard to brick an Android phone... but not impossible!

I do have to say that ROM Manager would have been the easiest option for you but installing from Recovery is fairly straightforward... so long as you understand what you are doing and don't rush into it blindly.

Essentially it is the same for all Android handsets, however, there can be subtle differences and I do not own the Motorola Quench.

You were on the right track with Power Off > Power On + holding down the Volume Down and Home keys until it boots.

I notice that there is a video in that link on ROM installation which may prove useful and give you confidence.

    Good luck glenn! :D

    alostpacket Over Macho Grande?

I know this thread is about an app, but I think it's also a bit more about rooting. so I moved this thread to the Cliq XT root forum. I think you find the best advice here :) Edit: looks like ironass got most of it sorted too :)

    Congratulations glenn!

Another obvious question I fear... have you also downloaded and installed the latest "gapps" (Google app's) package as well?

This, by default (and at Google's behest) does not come bundled with CM7 but must be downloaded and flashed separately.
