You should do some research in this sub-forum: Eris - All Things Root - Android Forums

I'd suggest starting with xtrSENSE 6.5. Download it by following the link you will find in this thread, in the second post (read the first post, though, even if you don't understand everything yet): http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726467

Copy the .zip file that is downloaded (do not unzip it - copy just the .zip file) to the top directory of your phone's SD card.

I'd suggest rooting with this method: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-things-root/127861-universal-eris-root-dummies.html (read this even if you choose the other method, because it better explains how to install a new ROM after you have rooted the phone) or with this method: http://androidforums.com/eris-all-t...is-app-apk-no-pcs-no-scripts-needed-easy.html

This is just a brief summary, but after you are rooted and restart in Amon's Recovery following the instructions in either of those two methods, use the menus to do the following:

    - Nandroid backup your setting now, in case you need to go back to what you have
    - From the wipe menu, do the option wipe data/factory reset
    - From the main menu, go to the option to flash a new zip file and choose the file that you downloaded earlier
    - When it is done, choose the option to reboot your phone. It should take a while to restart - perhaps as long as ten minutes - but then you should be ready to set the phone up using your Google account and then reinstall your applications.
