Root ROM/Radio install question

Hey everyone. I've been researching ROM's in deciding which one to install, and have narrowed it down to either Liquid Thunderbread or ShiftTh3ory. I am confused as to whether I need to flash in a radio first. I'm currently on the most recent update of stock, rooted via Revolutionary, so I'm assuming I have the MR2 radio. Do I need to flash a new radio for either of the above mentioned ROM's, or can I just do a data/cache wipe (and format-system?) and go for it (after backing up and getting a GPS lock before flashing). Sorry, but I don't want to completely screw up my phone by taking the wrong steps. Thanks.

I'm using shift aosp 1.2 by droidtheroy.

Download rom manager and install clockwork mod recovery. Download the rom of choice and the radio. The MR2 radio will work for both roms. It doesn't matter which you flash first but I recommend flashing the rom then radio.

Wipe data, wipe cache, wipe dalvik cache and format system before installing the rom.

To flash the radio you must move the file to the root of the SD card and rename it PG05IMG.zip. Power the phone off. Hold volume down button while powering phone on to get into Hboot. Follow the prompts to update the radio.
Good luck!

Edit: I did not have to do the GPS lock. Mine worked perfectly without it. And I'm using the radio in the shift aosp 1.2 thread on xda.

there is also quite a bit of info on wiping, making a backup, and flashing a rom,as well as flashing things like radios in hboot in the how to sticky at the top of the page.

read thru that and let us know if you have further questions :)

Another question - After I flash the ROM, do I then let it boot all the way in, and then reboot and flash the radios, or can I flash the radios before booting into the ROM for the first time? Thanks.

Flash the radio first. Roms don't always include a file manager. Reboot after flashing the radio. Do not be alarmed you will not have signal (wifi maybe but signal no). Go to your file manager of choice and delete the radio zip from the root of your SD. Now reboot in recovery. I suggest doing it manually. Backup. Wipe data/cache/dalvik cache. Flash the rom. Reboot. Sign into google, restore user apps with data from titanium, enjoy.

Thank you for the advice. I had already started installing the ROM when I had posted (based on previous advice in this thread), so I pressed forward. The ROM (finally went with ShiftS3NS3, took awhile to decide) loaded fine, but the strange thing is that my 4G signal works fine, as well as everything else, even without flashing the new radio. I'm wondering if I should go ahead and flash it anyway (it's the new 802? radio) - I don't know what havoc it may create either way.

At least I don't have to worry about OTA updates messing up my rooted phone anymore! Really enjoying ShiftS3NS3. I was torn between using a AOSP ROM and Sense, but I decided to stay with Sense for now since I was enjoyed the interface with the stock ROM. For those on the fence about flashing a new ROM as I was, the ShiftS3NS3 ROM is a nice place to start. Has everything you I am used to, and everything I didn't want from the stock ROM has been removed, pretty much.

That's debatable I think hand offs between networks is better on the newer radios

Ahh.. OK guess like your mileage may vary...
I wonder how the radio with the gingerbread release is going to fair..
Might not even be one of the ones out already..
Thanks,
Bryan

Yeah it could be updated versions of what we had with the 4th GB leaked radios. It may just be those radios. The LTE radio didn't change from the 3rd to the 4th leak so I wouldn't be surprised if that is the OTA radio.
