even if you change the serial last 4 digits to download it will still fail i tried it get a custom id error

I have an Orange branded Hero and decided just to install the Modaco Custom firmware based on this release. Very simple install process and increases handset usability ten fold. When Orange finally get around to releasing the branded version you can simply 'update' to the official version once more.

I downloaded this through the UK site but off the Asian server as the European one was being hammered.

Still ok to install though right?

I have an Orange handset so obviously I received the "not supported" comment, however I did manage to get it to download by changing just the last 2 digits of my SN. If I do install it will it work or is there a risk of creating a brick?

hi ben as i stated in my previous post it is possible to download it but you will get a id error 13 if you try to install it will fail

I spoke to Orange, they said it'll be available to download from the HTC site on Friday. Don't know how accurate that is but she didn't have to check with anyone she just said that straight away....I guess they've had lots of calls haha.

Just installed on my unbranded Hero. A bit worried............. ;o)

First time it it crashed half way through the update saying the USB link was lost. Anyway, also wrote down my O2 APN settings and used MyBackup to save applications and information. Let's see what happens now it's turning back on................

Blimey! You really do have to start from scratch with the new ROM. Agree with someone else's comment that the Nokia update system works better (including back-ups etc.). Ho hum!

Yes, I have. My Hero is imported from UK so I downloaded file from the UK page. The process took a little longer than I thought but everything went smoothly (having to reconfigure your email accounts, facebook, tweeter, and all minor customized settings AND re-installing all apps from the market that I had purchased it's a pain though (but I have to say it's a smart Market, it remembers what you purchased so no need to repay for stuff you already paid for) , but a very small price considering the benefit of updating.

All I have to say is: finally!!!

This is what o wrote over a week ago, just root it, it is easy.

Good advice... That's what I'd do if I was on T-Mobile or Orange

Had exactly the same problem with N95 firmware updates - luckily there are apps out there to change the codes that restrict the Firmware installs.

No problem with Orange version - I've been enjoying benefits of the update (along with extra features) for about 2 weeks now - relieved to watching these postings from a distance
