I've had my Evo for a few days now, former Pre user....I posted this in a different way on another thread but it didnt get enough responses or the responses I was looking for, here goes:

On the pre you had Preware to download patches (tweaks), the process was simple, just click the patch you wanted, self installed, thats it...patches were for anything that would enchance individual functions of your phone, not "replacing", but enhancing the way certain functions worked.....for the EVO, I assume these are "ROMS", is there such an app as Preware where we can on the phone search through ROMS, click and self install?

Or is installing ROMS on Android more technically involved? Also, where can one find a directory of these roms that are organized in order of what they are for?

Roms are like the difference between windows home and premium. Same basic OS with differences in some framework and function. Patches are let just a change or patch in code to change the function. Think of roms as a bundle of patches. Modding your evo is very different than the pre.

Take a look at `ROM Manager` in the android market. You will need to be fully rooted for it to be of any use to you.

Funny how I would run into a post like this. My friend, Palm Pre' user, just got done trying to show off his little tweaks to me. I Chuckled. :) Android, altho not that "Simply to Point and Patch" small things like the Pre' could, is much more advanced. ROMs are basically Fully customized themselves, and many are made to choose from. Like said above, ROM Manager is your best bet for organization for the ROMs, also for downloading them, and heck, even installing em. If you havent already, you should Full Root Your phone. :)

My phone seems to be rooted, guy i bought i from said it was, I posted a couple other threads today trying to figure out what method he may have used since he didnt seem to know what toast was....so I'm looking to root it tonight following the steps you mentioned above, seen that earlier today.....however, as we speak im trying to figure out how to backup my phone contacts and possibly texts, but phone contacts is more important to me, any idea how I can pull this off?

I noticed all my contacts are somehow in my gmail account, so thats good, but how do I transfer them back to the phone once I root?

Also, how do I reset the phone? And I wouldnt mind reseting the sd card so I can have a clean slate as if it were me that just unboxed the phone, Im sure there are files in there from whatever the previous owner did when rooting....can you guide me through this?

This will happen OTA once you put in your gmail account info in the new ROM.
