ROM discussions keep popping up in the root threads and is getting difficult to weed through for info. I can see what kind of ROMs are available, but to be honest, I'd really like to hear what people who are using various ones think of them as far as what works and what doesn't work and I'm sure new rooters would find this usefull as well when deciding.

I am currently using Plain Jane and although I like the Sense UI and most everything seems to work ok, I'm finding that I'm not totally happy with it. Little quirks like Facebook not populating my address book, and the font gets a tad hard to read with alot of text.

I don't think it supports a2sd, but I'm not 100% positive on that.

So what is everyone else using and what do you think of it as far as what works and what doesn't work in it.

Thanks Hypo for setting up this thread. I am so close to root. I am also curious about all of the ROMs out there.

Same here. I spent an hour this morning sucking up info through the firehose. What would be ideal is a spreadsheet with the various features/bugs for, say, the top 10 ROMs. It's a daunting task to select one if you're at all fussy about features and usability (which anyone who's rooting is likely to be).

I, too, have the same questions hinted at in another thread. I was planning on checking out PJ to start with as well. But it would be nice to know what to expect. I know it's a daunting task for someone to put together but some sort of features/bug list on the top ROMs would be awesome.

I've been thinking about Root too, I'd ideally like to goto Froyo 2.2, so any insight would be great!

try xtrROM3.0.3 its a Vanilla ROM and its fast and stable. you can pick and choose whether you want to use Apps2SD, JIT or Live Wallpapers. You can also choose to flash your Facebook sync into it and Google apps like 3d Gallery, Gmail, or Talk.

and if you want Sense there is also a separate ROM called xtrSENSE with the same options.

I'm currently running KaosFroyo v23 (the latest version). It's the first custom ROM I've used. I rooted my phone a couple of days ago. It's a nice ROM. It has the latest Overclocked (OC) Kernal. What this means is that it's already clocked at 710mhz compared to the 528mhz the phone is clocked with the official 2.1 OS from VZW. I am using SetCPU to clock the CPU at 787mhz. However, it's still very laggy. I have heard people say that their rooted phone running KaosFroyo is lag free, but that's not my experience. Yes, it definitely loads web pages considerably faster. It loads Facebook pictures faster and status updates faster, but it still lags on the home screens. It still lags when unlocking the phone. It still lags when typing at times. The keyboard is a lot better in KaosFroyo than the official 2.1 ROM, though.

The dialer is a lot better, but still very laggy. However, you can make calls, end the call, and immediately make another call without having to wait minutes for the phone to clear the RAM. This is nice. It doesn't do nearly as good a job syncing the Facebook contacts to your phone contacts, though.

The problem I have with KaosFroyo is that it allows the rotation of the home screens. This means before backing out of the application you're in, you have to rotate back to portrait mode, and sometimes if you turn the phone wrong it rotates the home screen while you're looking at it. It's a hassle. Also, there is no silent. There is only different volume levels and vibrate.

I've been told that using LauncherPro instead of ADW Launcher gives you an option to turn of rotation of the home screens. I tried LauncherPro for a minute and I didn't like it. Also, I am yet to find a good digital clock for my main home screen. I'm using flipclock right now, and it's ok, but it doesn't look at crisp and sharp as the Sense Clock.

I hope I dont get in trouble for posting a link to help out. Im a new member (long time lurker), so mods, please dont be mad. Just let me know that Im not supposed to do it.

In regards to a v24 for KaosFroyo, it is available at XDA Forums here

I am running v23 and its amazing how fast it is and my Eris doesnt lag nearly as much as it used to on 2.1 Leak v3.

On another note, I love this forum! Packed full of plenty of information! :)

I just noticed something that helped me out with KaosFroyov24. If you only overclock to 729mhz the phone runs much smoother when switching screens, unlocking, and opening and closing apps. I dont have FC's anymore like I did when i had my Eris running at 787mhz for a few days. It is still very fast at 729 compared to what we all came from before Root.

This is also true with most of the roms I've used in regards to the 787mhz speed. It seems like the eris doesn't like that particular one for some reason or another. I've been able to go one click above 787 in certain ROMS and it's been stable (only on certain roms). The speed I've had the most success with is 748mhz.

I'm downloading Evil Eris 3.0. I've been looking at it and digging through some forums and there doesn't appear to be any glaring issues with it. I'll report my findings after I install it and tinker with it a bit. Like I said before, there is nothing blatently wrong with Plain Jane, I just am finding teh font a tad annoying as it is used EVERYWHERE and I am rather annoyed by not being able to link my contacts with Facebook anymore.

So I've been tinkering with Evil Eris 3.0 and it looks pretty solid. Still not syncing my Facebook, but I picked up synchMyPix and that seems to work out. The layout is a little different than Sense, but it is pretty cool. I can still use the HTC and Android widgets. They use a different Photo Gallery in it that is really slick. I actually like it better than teh stock gallery.

For me, I think Evil Eris 3.0 is where I'm going to stay for now.

The rotation is a setting in ADW.

For Facebook, to manually join, go to edit contact, menu/join, hit search button (softkey), type FB name, hit Search for all contacts. Should pop up.

    Try Beautiful Widgets.

xtrSENSE rom does not have Live Wallpapers. I'm running the latest update of that rom and the developer confirmed "no live wallpapers." Just an FYI.

Great fast/stable rom otherwise (Sense, OC, Apps2SD, JIT, Cool lock screen...)

xtrSense doesn't have Live wallpapers but xtrROM3.0.3 does... there's 2 different ones (one with sense and one vanilla {without sense})

I really like Cyanogen 5.08 based ROMs. I tried White Widow, CM Eris Lightning Bolt, and Droid Does. The one I like the most is CM Eris Lightning Bolt because it's the most stable in my opinion. I can safely overclock to 787MHz. Everything is snappy and just the way I like it. Droid Does is a great ROM if you want your phone to look like a Droid X. White Widow is basically the same as CM Eris Lightning Bolt except for a few features.

So my list of favorite ROMs are in this order:

    1. CM Eris Lightning Bolt
    2. Droid Does
    3. White Widow

    AwesomeIT,
On Kaos Froyo 23-24, you can silence the phone without adjusting any volume. On the screen when you get the lock button slide; the alternative button (on the right, slide towards the left) shows a little speaker icon. Then then sound will be off with vibrate active!
