Sorry if this is a dumb question, but seeing as Google likes everything open will we have root access out of the box or will we still need to root it?

I personally am very excited about it and I'm getting one for me and my wife on the 16th.

If it's anything like Nexus One, it should have a simple bootloader unlock that is irreversible and then root is simple right after that. It's an official way of rooting that comes with also voiding your warranty.

You will still need to root.
