Root Root and unlock (t-mobile) htc hero

I have a htc hero locked to t-mobile.
And I would like to root it and then unlock it.

The current firmware is 1.5.
Could you please explain step by step how to do this please,

Rooting the handset won't make unlocking any easier; removing a network lock requires an unlock code either from T-Mobile or an online seller.

There's a comprehensive guide to rooting the Hero here. Be aware that 1.5 is well out-dated now; all networks released an update to 2.1 some time ago. If you decide to root it would be advisable to update the firmware before doing so.
