Keeping it short and sweet as possible...

Us996 model. Already unlocked bootloader through lg officially. Been wanting to root for a while. Granted, i still meed to figure out how to get around Pokemon go's blocking measures but I've already completed the main dex in let's go eevee, so, if i have to take an extended break from the game i guess i can.

The thing that irks me is all the time leading up to when i bought the phone, the "holy grail" that is XDA said over and over "get the us996 or you won't be able to root at all". But now that i have one, i can't find how to root it anywhere on their site anymore. To say this is frustrating, is an understatement. And part of me is tired of retrying.

trying to follow the scripts, but where the instructions imply I should be seeing TWRP, instead it's just boot looping. it's not responding to anything, I can't get the phone to work again. Help!

Okay, not sure what just happened... I see TWRP now! oh my lord, please let this be it... fingers crossed!

Nope, it just keeps boot looping. won't let me back up what I have now, or anything.

Seems to take several attempts to even try to get TWRP to show up. it only ever shows up after doing the OEM "factory reset". I can't boot into system again, at all. And of course, since I can't boot into system, or anything else, I can't even reflash the kdz. FML...

So, to reiterate, the phone is boot-looping. At present, after several attempts, I can get it to prompt me to do a factory reset. If I select yes and confirm, I don't know what it does. It does boot up to TWRP. But I can't get to boot up the phone normally, at all. it barely blinks the LG logo before rebooting.

the guide mentions rebooting into fastboot if it takes longer for twrp to boot up. then you have to enter the flash boot command. have you tried this?

i would not factory reset just yet.

I don't know how to enter fastboot. I don't seem to have that option. and trying to juggle pressing buttons around the extended battery isn't fun, either.

That doesn't work for me. Like, at all. I barely see the LG logo for a blink before it reboots.

I have tried flashing boot2 and boot1, and it won't get past the LG logo.

ok what exactly did you do? if you can list the steps you did. did you use the guide i linked? or a different one?

holding down either volume key and power button does literally nothing. it doesn't respond to that. It just keeps boot looping. I have to yank the battery, plug it in, then the volume and power until I get the prompt for a factory reset. If I get there, and perform it, it just takes me to TWRP after.

I can't boot normally anymore. full stop.

so you have twrp? what do you see on the twrp menu?
I only ever see TWRP after agreeing to the factory reset. Not sure why.
At least from there, I can select to reboot to bootloader, and try flashing either boot1 image or boot2 image. Neither appear to work for me, however. I still can't get past the LG logo booting up normally. It just keeps rebooting over and over endlessly.

are you sure you have twrp? reboot to bootloader is not part of twrp's menu. it seems that you are in recovery mode and not twrp.

It says the twrp spplash screen. it lets me see the menu. but it won't let me do a system backup either. it always fails. Can try to install supersu or magisk zip files... but that's not really helping me boot the stupid thing right now.

the package also came with a patched version of LGUP, and I have the kdz that's meant for this model. but how do I even get to where I can flash it, if I can't even get it to let me select the boot mode to be in?

if you do have twrp you can try wiping cache, dalvik cache(its been awhile, but i think you still need to do this) and data, and then flash a custom rom.

it sounds like whatever you did either corrupted your system partitions or wiped it clean.....so you most likely need a rom to flash to be able to boot up normally.

or you can flash a firmware update, but this will most likely unroot you and you will have to start over. i have no clue how to flash firmware for your phone as i am not that experienced with how lg allows you to flash their firmware updates.

This sounds like what happened...

I was trying to use TWRP to backup the factory ROM as a manner of habit and prudence. Kept rejecting me each time.

but then wipe system, data, etc... was able to update TWRP, and then also flash Resurrection Remix 7.0.2 for it. It appears to be booting, and I was able to flash Magisk 21.4. Just need to figure out what version of GApps I need for this phone, and then I could feasibly be ready to go. Just gotta make sure the phone still works...

and i have never wiped system so be careful with that. also once you have a working phone again, make sure you make a nandroid backup and have one saved on your phone as well as a copy of it on your computer or a storage device like a flash drive or sd card.

Yeah, I typically keep said backup on the SD card in case the internal nand itself gets hosed for whatever reason.

Either way, it sure appears that wiping system/data and flashing RR was what I needed to do, since i was able to successfully update TWRP. And got Magisk installed as well. Suppose I need to put my sim card in. but yeah, I forgot... what architecture does the v20 follow for the GApps download? figure I might need that so i can use my gmail and such.

After this, I should probably also look do doing the same with my G4, now that I found it to use as a stand-by.

sorry that i can't help you. i have no idea on what gapps to use. if i come up with something i'll post it.
Google Apps, specifically. they segment based on architecture and OS version. Google's m.o. is that anyone can make a custom rom, but they can't package the framework with it. Helps to comply with countries that otherwise would bar/ban google from operating there (e.g. China). So at most it's a separate download. But gotta know the OS build and the hardware version you're working with, in order to get the download to install.

In any case, I took a guess and went with arm64 and since RR 7.0.2 is based on Android 9, that seems to work. Got a lotta (re)downloading and reinstalling, sure. But good golly am I glad that it's working again. :rob:

So far, so good. Every thing I've tested up to this point appears to be working, save for Amazon app for some reason. Keeps acting as if i don't have a network connection, even though i have been able to sign in to newegg and watch YouTube without an issue.

Even Pokémon go is working, which i didn't expect, given Niantic's attitude toward such things. Hopefully i don't jinx myself for posting that.
