Are you sure you want to root it, what are you trying to achieve? Root will give you full administrative access to your file system, but will also stop certain apps such as Banking apps from working, as it's a security risk.

If you are just looking to install a custom ROM you can do this without rooting, just follow the procedure on Cyanogenmods website to install a custom recovery image....

I too am looking to root my phone, just so I can get rid of some bloatware. I do not want to install a ROM, just root. I've also read that installing CWM is a bad idea, is this true?

I really don't understand why this is so difficult.

    What I have
Samsung Galaxy Note N7000 fully charged.
    ICS v 4.0.4
    Baseband v XXLRK
    Kernel 3.0.15-N7000XXLRK-CL811902
    Build IMM76DXXLRK

    What I want
    Root N7000
    4.2 update
    Ubuntu

    Problem I have
It would appear that I need to 'root' the phone, but I don't know how to do that. I keep reading how simple it is, but nothing is recognised by the Root Checker app I downloaded.

I see there is consensus here that Cyanogen is the way to go, but everywhere else I go, it states that the phone must be be rooted. So - if someone would be so kind - could you please explain how to root the N7000 in terms that we can actually understand?

    Your help is greatly appreciated.

If all you really want is to start off by just being rooted, then read this thread first, and ensure you understand the terminology and the process before even starting to attempt to root, better to ask questions upfront before you flash, than after the event and you have semi-bricked phone :)
