So after reading thru allot of threads concerning people loosing root and such via ota here are the steps i have taken and successfully have ROOT from ICS - JB ( have completed on 3 separate HD MAXX phones)

1.Follow this step by step: DROID RAZR HD Utility 1.10: http://forum.xda-developers.com/show....php?t=1970267

    (sign into play store)
    2. Open Safestrap and apply recovery
    3. Open SU and update Binaries
    4. Open Voodoo and protect root
    5. Open Voodoo and Temp Unroot
    6. Open / Download OTA coming from 4.0.4 download will be 0.7.2
    download and install update
    7. after phone reboots open voodoo and restore root
    8. download rootchecker , you should still have root
    9. Open safestrap and uninstall recovery
    10. Open Voodoo and temp unroot
    11. Download the JB update Via OTA
    12. Repeat step 7
    13. Open SafeStrap and re-install recovery
    14. Open Rootchecker and insure you still have root

Like i said i have used this method 3x so far and have had 0 problems.

Just an fyi... I was able to update to 0.7.2 before rooting using the utility.

edit - when following the steps above, I was successful skipping 5, 6 and 7.

The first time I tried it, I substituted the JB update for the 0.7.2 update in step 6. The update failed. I checked for root and then started again at step 8 and it worked fine. Apparently, you must uninstall recovery in Safestrap for the JB update to install. (probably obvious, but I'm still learning)
