How do I root my droid so that I can use it as a hot spot for my iPad?

Many of the newer ROMS offer WIFI tethering which should meet your needs. Here is my current favorite:

There is a standalone free WIFI Tether app available in the market for rooted Droids. Do a search for "Wireless Tether" in the market.
