I've searched on the Internet and found so many root programs that I don't know where to begin. Can someone suggest software I can use to root my Motorola Droid that is quick and simple to use. I'm using the 2.2 system update.

Do you have FGR22D or FRG01B?

The problem with FRG22D is that the one-click method I used, "easyroot" doesn't support FRG22D. If you have the earlier version, then easyroot is the quickest way to do it.

If not, them I'm sure you can find a one-click method for FRG22D. In fact, there was one a few weeks ago on droid-life.com

"Soup and root" is so very simple. Please use that and then flash chevyno 1 1.25 kernal so you could use tether. Rom manager definitely helped me with backing up stuff and helping me flash as I'm very much a noob. I hope this helps...
