I have a HTC EVO 4G, I bought it used and the guys told me it was half way unrooted but still rooted, whatever that means.. The problem I'm having is the phone won't do any updates. it is running on Android Version 2.2 I know there have been several updates and would like to update my phone. Do i need to unroot and the reroot or what exactly do I need to do?
I been reading I can unroot with some RUU file to download but I have not been able to find a good link.

    Thanks

I think when he said your phone was haft way unrooted, he means that the bootloader on your phone has been unlocked, you only have to root your phone.
With some branches(e.g sony e), when you have unlocked your phone boot loader, you should not update your phone because it'll cause problem (i.e brick )

I've heard gingerbread is the 2.3.3 update and that its better. What if I wanted to update, how would I go about doing that?

I'm not really experienced enough to help you, but stay patient...someone will come along. Before they do, they will probably need to know more specifics about your phone.

First are you trying to root, or unroot your phone?

I would also suggest that you post the Android version and rom that you are running. Go to settings, about phone, and software and post what you see there.

edit: oh and welcome to android forums!

    welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
ok so lets find out where your phone's state is. so power off the phone then press and hold power+vol down. this should get you to the bootloader. on the bootloader screen it should say either s-on or s-off as well as what version your hboot is. can you report what you see on the screen?

it should like something like this:
    SUPERSONIC EVT2-3 SHIP S-ON
    HBOOT-2.02.0000
    MICROP-041f
    TOUCH PANEL-ATMEL224_16ab
    RADIO-2.15.00.09.01
    Aug 19 2010, 14:29:08

we just need to know if you have s-on or s-off and what hboot you have. from there we can steer you in the right direction. also you will have to decide which way you want to go. do you want to be rooted or do you want to have an unrooted phone?

To add on to what OCN stated, don't try to update your phone just in case you are rooted. As Aptos stated above it can break your root or possibly send the phone to Brick City. :(

Lets see what your hboot says then we can guide you in from there. :)

    Android version 2.2

I guess what I want to do is unroot, to stock and then upgrade to gingerbread. Then I would root again cause I use tethering alot.

no need to do an update on the phone. once you are rooted all you would have to do is just flash a gingerbread rom and you are now updated.

but first though we need the info that i asked about in my previous post. you need to go into the bootloader and provide the info that is displayed there. we need to know if you have s-off or s-on and what version your hboot is.

so power off the phone then press and hold power+vol down.

As Ocn said, there is no need to unroot. You will accomplish the same thing by flashing the rooted stock rom that came in the OTA. We need the info that he requested though so we can get you in the right direction.

ok so you have s-on which means that you have your securities turned on.

next question is do you have a custom recovery? so in the same menu you can select recovery. if you get a red exclamation mark then you are fully unrooted. if you have a custom recovery (it most likely will be either clockwork mod or amon ra. it should say at the bottom of the screen) then your phone is in a weird state.

either way you will have to use unrevoked to get you fully rooted. here is the guide you will need to use:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/194918-rooting-dummies.html. if you have any questions about the process please feel free to ask. just make sure to read the guide fully before attempting to root your phone.

once you are rooted then we can go ahead and get you updated.

    Your Hboot says:

    Supersonic ship: S-ON

This means the hboot has the security turned on.

Now when you select recovery it shows Amon-Ra V 2.3, which is a custom recovery. The only way to get a custom recovery is if the phones securities are turned off, or S-OFF. Your phone had S-Off at one time, but somehow you got the security turned back on.

Like the guys stated above, you can update everything with your custom recovery without unrooting. ;) :)

My guess is that someone started to unroot it and never finished. Remember hboot 2.10 and below required the s-on tool to be flashed from recovery first then the RUU after.....GB is opposite I think now.

You should be good to go. Unrevoked will give you s-off then you will be fully rooted and we can discuss your new addiction :)

yes i would use unrevoked to get you fully rooted. read and follow the guide i linked then once you get s-off then we can get you updated.

i think that the easiest way to get updated is to flash mikg3.0. it is a very nice rom that is very smooth, stable, and waaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay better then stock.
    here is the link:MikG v3.0 [12/17/2011]

Ok guys here is an update of what I did.....I followed instructions and rooted, it was weird cause it finished on screen saying rebooting to recovery and wouldnt so nothing else. (The revoked program) now here is what my phone says now:

    SUPERSONIC EVT3 SHIP S-OFF
    HBOOT-2.10.0001
    MICROP-041f
    TOUCH PANEL-ATMELC03_16ac
    RADIO-2.15.00.11.19
    OCT 15 2010, 12:07:00

IS THERE ANYTHING ELSE I NEED TO CHECK?

When you select recovery now, do you get the red exclamation point or can you actually get to the custom recovery?

    Ok!

Looks to me like you are rooted with the UnRevoked process.

I used a different process but I think here on out we are the same as far as what we can do and how we do it.

    look at this thread, http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html

Look at the After rooting section.

Follow the directions there to change your recovery to Amon Ra, a stable and reliable one that wipes well, which is key for much of this.

Make a nandroid backup, it will tell you how.

    then get your flash on!

here is a link given you previously for one of the best roms out there now, http://themikmik.com/showthread.php?10338-MikG-v3-0-12-17-2011

The guide will have you dl superwipe and tell you how to wipe and the process of flashing a rom.

be patient with it, ask all the questions you need to!

    Welcome to the forums!!!

With S-OFF and a custom recovery your officially rooted!

The links provided above by dustwin will give you plenty of information. However, note that the how to ROOT/UNROOT information in them will NOT apply to you because you didnt use rEVOlution to gain root.
