I've already cleared out all the crap that att shipped, the games I don't want.

What else.. cant unlock the bootloader without paying more for the unlock than I did for the phone. No OCing for me.

    Hello and welcome!

What phone do you have? You'll get much better responses in the all things root forum for your device. You can find the list of devices here or just post it and I can move it for you

Its a sony experia play.. though I'm not sure what make the phone has to do with anything. Without an unlocked bootloader.. not sure I can go much in the way of custom roms.

Yes.But why do you have to pay to unlock Bootloader

Head here to check whether you can unlock Bootloader
    Instructions | Sony Xperia

IMO Dont try to unlock using the Test Point method .It is quite unsafe .

Karandpr - I've already done those. The thing that is stopping me is the lack of fastboot. ATT has locked it out. The only way to get it enabled is to pay someone (JZIF I believe it is) online to enable it as far as I've seen. I've only searched for about 3 hours so far on doing it.. I very well could have missed something.

The other odd thing I'm seeing is that where is says "Bootloader unlock allowed " - there isn't even a line for Bootloader unlock allowed = anything.

The only method I've seen to get around this, if it's even doable, is to unlock fast boot mode and go blindly into it (hope it works, brick if it doesnt). Not really interested in bricking my phone.. but why not.. it's under warranty. From what I've read.. just using the sim subsidy unlock code doesn't get you your fastboot.. which appears to be the biggest issue for me. In a sense.. the unlocking of the bootloader is free.. but getting the phone to a state that allows me to unlock it isn't.

If memory serves me well, "Bootloader Unlocked: Allowed" means that it is not yet unlocked. Correct me if I'm wrong but what you want is a fastboot and unlocked bootloader? This is the complete step by step instructions for that Sony Ericsson Xperia Play: Full Update Guide - CyanogenMod Wiki If you just want fastboot and unlocked bootloader, then don't mind the Flashing CyanogenMod part.

I have an Xperia Ray and I just got fastboot and unlocked bootloader yesterday using the instructions(the guide above is the same for Xperia Ray). Do not forget to backup just in case.

    Hope it helps :)

Just as a general point, as I don't know SE phones, but the make does make a difference. The techniques for rooting differ for different phones.

On my own handset it's actually quite possible to flash custom ROMs without an unlocked bootloader - rooting tools use an exploit to flash a custom recovery image, and you can then use that to flash ROMs or other system modifications.

ed - the problem is that there is NO entry for "Bootloader Unlocked: Allowed"

Fastboot has to be enabled on the phone. These two steps:
Don't work on my phone.. it doesn't boot into fastboot. That was disabled via ATT. The only way I've seen so far to unlock it is something I'm not willing to do (involves paying).

    From the page you linked:
This is what I'm running into ^

Hadron - the Kernel itself isn't accessable via flashing on the SE phones. They hide the bootloader and make it unaccessable.

Back to the original post.. it wasn't about overclocking my phone or anything along those lines.

What I meant was.. I've already rooted my phone. What is available to me as root that you guys recommend that wasn't available to me without root. I have already cleared off the ATT crap and the games I don't want. What else do you recommend?

I wish the toggles I have from sony would have a 3g.. it's got gps, wifi, sync, bluetooth, and screen brightness (very dim, 1/2 bright, bright, auto)

Can you name a good widget for it?

Thanks, I'll look it up when I get home. I'd love to find one with every radio toggle.. I could do without the screen.. I set it at medium and rock on.
