i rooted my friends phone using z1 and installed the usual root based apps (setcpu and the like). was all well and good till today when she OTA'd the gb upgrade. from what i can tell the only issue is that she's no longer rooted. i have two questions:

    1. is it safe to re-root using z1?

    2. did something else get messed up in the OTA process?

The OTA Gingerbread is not rootable at this point in time, maybe later on.
I hope your friend has everything backed up! If so you can restore the apps later.
In order to move to a rooted GB DX you need to SBC back to 340 root it again install d2 bootstrap not the Dx version. Then install the patched 2 part prerooted version of gingerbread.
For sbfing to 340 get the Linux CD version here it is fast and painless. Root and install d2 bootstrap. Copy the 2 part patch of Gb to the SD card and install. Set up the phone and then restore the apps.

FOLLOW ALL INSTRUCTIONS TO THE LETTER FOR BOTH THE LINUX CD AND THE 2 PART PATCH INSTALL.

    You should do fine.:)
