what rom are you on? most roms have the hotspot already hacked. in the guide there are some apk's that you install by using a file manager like es file manager or root explorer. if you need help pleease let us know what specifically you need help with. but we need to knwo what you tried and what happened so that we can help.

ok basically most roms will have this feature already added to the rom. myn's was the one if the first roms to have it cooked in. that guide is kind of old but it has tons of info that still apply. try flashing a rom. i would suggest mik2.53 it is fast and very stable. it has the hotspot added and also has the latest 4.53 ota added as well. if you need help flashing it please read this:http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html there is a flashing section that will give you instructions on how to flash a rom.

if you look at the top of this forum, you will a bunch of stickied threads. there is a rom/kernel page that is kept up to date with all of the current roms and kernels. i highly recommend that you take the time and go through and read all of them. there is a ton of great info there. i would highly recommend that you read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html, especially the flashing section. also if you have not switched your recovery to amon ra, i would also suggest it as well. the info for that can be found in the recoveries and the switching recovery section.

    anyways here is the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all-things-root/284413-roms-kernels-download-page.html.

read the other stickies as well though.

You have alternatives to wifi tether such as USB and Bluetooth tether which are free from the Market and don't require anything extra. Search for "PDaNet" and "EasyTether". Both are free but have subscriptions to enable "https" domains. Basically they are free as long as you never have to login through a "https" URL. Sites that would carry this are places like Yahoo Email login, Facebook login, MySpace login, etc. After that, most of these sites run on a regular "http" and are free to browse using these apps. The one from PDaNet costs about $10 and it's pretty fast and easy to use. I recommend it and if you'd like to use it how I use it, I can show you a few tricks around the "https" rule.

But, if you want wifi tether, you'll have to do a bit more work.
Either you can purchase Sprint's official one for $30 an extra a month or you can root your phone.

To root your phone is to basically disable security off of the phone and make you, as the user, in 100% ultimate control over the phone. When this happens you are able to do numerous things such as delete apps that came with your phone, customize the look and feel of the phone, and allow wifi tethering without Sprint's official plan.

To learn more about rooting and how to root your phone, head over the the EVO 4G - All Things Root - Android Forums forum and check out the Rooting for Dummies sticky thread as well as the new Gingerbread Rooting Guide which are both first on the list of threads.

Once your phone is rooted, you have two options:
    1. Download a free, generic wifi tethering app from the Market such as Wifi Tether or Barnacle (I do not recommend but it's the easiest way)
    2. Get a ROM with tethering enabled. Once you learn about how to root, you'll come across what are known as "ROMs" and each of these typically comes with some sort of way to tether wirelessly as well as through USB. (I highly recommend this route over #1 as the ROMs typically have their own tethering app or have a hacked version of the Sprint app. Either of these run just as well and much better, smoother, and in my opinion, a faster connection.)

EDIT: Sorry I didn't read the above comments before posting...another great place to go for a complete list or ROMs for the Evo is here.

ASOP based ROMs like MIUI or CM7 (I'm on CM7) have ways of tethering through the ROM itself. For mine, I go under Settings and there is a way to tether either wirelessly or through USB.

Sense based ROMs like EViO and Fresh had hacked versions of the Sprint wifi tethering app in the list of apps. I remember someone telling me that you can get the hacked Sprint app from somewhere else and install it on your rooted phone, but I'll have to find that thread I made.

If you are on the Stock ROM, the Sprint tethering app will work just as it did before and that will only let you tether if you have a plan through Sprint.

I tried the mik rom from the roms and kernels page and i had to go to a backed up version of my phone. I am not sure if i did something wrong or if there is something wrong with the rom (probably not) but I am not sure i want to try again. Also i tried the vrr_supersonic wipe and it said i didn't have something up to date or some doo dad.

you most likely have clcokwork mod 3 or higher which will not work with the supwipe. please read the http://androidforums.com/evo-4g-all...ooting-dummies-guide-gingerbread-edition.html if you want to switch recoveries. there is a section with directions on how to do it. alsow make sure that you wipe dalvik cache, cache and data as well before flashing a rom. and do not forget to make a nandroid backup as well.

My sound notification for my regular email only won't change at all even from the sounds that came with the rom. I have changed the sound in notifications many times as a matter of fact right now it's something else chosen and I am still getting the default
