I have tried for three days to update to 2.3 and I keep getting the Android with the exclamation point in the triangle. As I mentioned in the title I rooted using Unrevoked Forever, in Bootloader it says missing or wrong image, I have already done factory reset, and s on Please help.

How did you try to "update" to 2.3? Do you have a recovery?

I would like to understand the thought process to unrooting to get an update(especially one as lacking as this one) and not having the chance to root again afterwards for an indefinite period. I just don't get it. Oh well, their phone their choice.

You will have to flash a PC36IMG file for 2.2 to return your recovery to stock and your rom to stock. Then you can accept the OTA if it is what you are really looking to do. You will not be able to reroot for an undetermined period of time though.

ok so you want to unroot. no problem. do you have s-on? the unrooting process is two steps:
    1. flash the s-on tool
    2. via PC36IMG install a stock rom and recovery
can you give some more info on where you are at in the process?

The only reason I'm rooted is so I can Wifi tether. I have bad luck with getting reliable ROMS to run stable on my previous Android phone so I would rather be stock and just have Wifi tethering.

If you unroot, you will not be able to use wifi tether for free. You can flash the current rooted stock rom for 2.3 and have a basically stock phone with the ability to use root apps like wifi tether. If you want to go that way, here is the link to the rooted stock rom. Flash the odex version as it is the stock version just with root access.

    [ROM][STOCK] --- Version 4.22.651.2 --- Odexed & De-Odexed --- - xda-developers

There are alot of stable roms out with lots of extras and everything working.

    1. Make sure you have S-ON, to turn S-ON (Download File Here) Transfer the file to your SD card as a zip.
    2. Power off your device, after device power down, Hold down the Volume Down button and Press the Power on Button.
    3. You should now be in HBOOT Bootloader, press the volume down to Recover, push the power button to select Recover. Wait, Bootloader will boot into Recover, select "Install Zip from SD card" the select "Choose Zip from SD card" then select "unrevoked-forever.zip"
    4. After completed, reboot system.

(before continuing, I recommend doing a nand backup in Clockwork Mod Recovery)

If you already have S-ON start here.
    5. Download the PC36IMG file here after download, rename the file to PC36IMG.zip with the PC36IMG in all caps, make sure your file looks like this PC36IMG.zip and not PC36IMG.zip.zip
    6. Transfer the file PC36IMG.zip to your SD card.
    7. Power off the phone, once phone is powered off, hold down volume button and press the power button to load into Bootloader.
    8. Bootloader will extract contents of PC36IMG.zip and ask if you want to continue, select YES.
    9. Allow phone to go through this process, don't touch it unless it asks you a question.
    10. You are now unrooted, go to settings>system updates>HTC software updates>check now
    11. Download Gingerbread!

so here is a more in depth answer to your question:What Is Odex And Deodex In Android [Complete Guide].

    basically:
odexed is smaller not very customizable but fast
de-odexed is much bigger but very customizable

    welcome to the forums!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
currently the 2.3.3 gingerbread update is not rootable yet. with most ota's manufacturer like htc will usually close the exploit that was found. so with the new ota comes with a new hboot(2.16). so now an exploit needs to be found before we can root our phones. so unfortunately you will have to wait. just keep checking back here. we will let everyone know when an exploit has been found for the new hboot. we will have a sticky explaining on how to root your phone.

Man every time I see one of these posts about wanting to unroot and take the ota it kills me. I would gladly trade places with any of you as my warranty replacement phone has the crap ota and I can't root.
