Hello. Ive been reading for a while but just now started posting. Im hoping you guys could give me some help. I have a samsung moment with Sprint Official 2.1 and i would love to root my phone. But the only set back is that i am running Ubuntu NBR 10.4. And all of the guides I can find are for windows. can someone please help me and point me in the right direction? it would be greatly appreciated.

I would recommend you use this:

Make your choices. You can, if you want, choose nothing other than Stock DE03 with Root v7. At the bottom, hit submit, and you'll get an update zip file. Save this file to the root of your sdcard. Boot your phone into recovery mode (vol-down+talk+end) and apply that zip from the sd card.

Dang. I wasn't sure if that would work.

I haven't got time to write up the steps I took right now, but hopefully I can get to you later, or someone else can help you out before then.

Looks like it's up to me. Ok, I still don't have the time right now to write up a full explanation, so I'll link you to the steps I followed.

Look about 20 posts down to a lengthy post by Dreze explaining what to do.

You really just need to do the part to load Recovery 3.0.8. Once you do that, I think you can run the update zip you created before and be all rooted and stuff.

But this still doesnt solve my problem. I can download all of the stuff but I cant run it because im in linux. and wine only does so much trying to run .exe wise.
