Rooting after 2.1

Its nothing new that the stock 2.1 sucks, but ive seen a number of people comment that you cant root to a custom rom after updating to 2.1, which i have done. My question is, is it possible to root after going to 2.1 (to any of the preferred roms) or am I stuck until a 2.1 root becomes available? If I can still root, would someone mind walking me through it if i pm'd you my gmail info? Ive only had my hero for about a week and a half, and being my first android phone, im pretty new to this stuff.

Not at the present time, but I am sure there will be in the next couple of weeks from what I have been reading
