I am thinking about renewing my contract and purchasing an Xperia X10 or possibly another android phone. The carrier I have requires data when using a smartphone. The problem is that I am virtually always near a wifi connection so I don't need data. Is there or will there ever be and app or a way to root the X10 so that my carrier thinks I am using some other phone and I don't have to be charged for data?

If I was unclear, please ask questions.

    Thank you.

To fool your carrier in terms of what device you are using, you will need to spoof your IMEI. As of this post, there is no known way to achieve that.

android lets you turn off mms and data with a simple tick in a box in the wireless controls settings under mobile networks so the phone would never use its 2/3g connection
