First off let me apologize if this thread is in the wrong place. I am also sure this may have been covered before. I want to root my desire and upon researching and searching for the proper procedure to doing this I have come across conflicting reports, and or some confusion, or maybe its just me (if so I apologize for this) Could someone at least point me in the correct direction. Here is my phone info:

    BRAVOC DVTZ SHIP ON
    HBOOT 1.06
    MICROP 051e
    TOUCH PANEL SYNT0101
    RADIO 2.15.00.11.16
    BUILD 2.11.573.5
    ANDROID 2.2

Now I'm generally somewhat tech savvy but I am a bit confused on a few things. Is this phone rootable?
    Do I use revelutionary?
Unrevoked 3? (the unrevoked site says this device is supported but have heard 1.06 is not ?)

Any info or support is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Fox

Firstly I really recommended reading through all the provided FAQs and guides on this forum. They really are decent and will answer all your rooting needs.
Also, the rooting method is up to you depending on what you want. Revolutionary.io offers you to gain root access and S-off your phone allows you more capabilities .. but that's a different topic I feel.

@articfox. Check out WWW.revolutionary.io it confirms that your hboot is compatible and therefore once you ate s-off with revolutionary you can flash a custom recovery like amon RA or clockwork which will give you root access and the ability to flash different Roms etc.

I would also agree with Jon_Ltd to read the guides aswell as there is a bit more to it than just get rooted start flashing.
    I.e partition SD card etc.

Thanks guys ! yeah I did read FAQ and as I was reading previous posts there just was some confusion as to weather 1.06 was rootable. I'm trying to clear up any doubt (on my part) before doing this as this is my first attempt at rooting.I like to get things right the first time. Thanks for your help

Good idea....I would also recommend being really sad (like me) and writing yourself a step by step guide just so you don't have to keep returning to the FAQs etc and losing you place etc.
It is a great prompt to make sure you have everything you need before you start

You are 1.06 hboot bravoc. Cdma.
    Revolutionary should be fine.
Be careful most of the rooting community is full of default GSM stuff. Always check whether it is rom or anything else.

Thanks everyone for your help. Successfully gained S-off and root access last night with revolutionary. Was actually easier then I thought it would be. I was just nervous that I'd mess something up, but as usual there comes a point where you just gotta do it and not be scared so after extensive reads and rereading of steps just did it and was successful now time to find a ROM. Thanks to all.

Sorry if I may sound a bit naive, I use be be a kind of IT expert in the late 90's now I sound like of of those dude were coming to me with silly question like 'my pc does not see the printer, should I turn the monitor in its direction?" ...doh

thanks for your help and understanding

    Hello guys,
I would like to share with you my feeling about rooting. I would love to have the complete controll of my htc desire, I know it will bring me more memory space and a wide choice of rom ecc...
here my question, during the process of rooting and flashing imaging something goes wrong (imagining from a simple mistake till a blackout) what is the worst it could happen? bricking my toy? ...is here any way back?

    Thanks

    S.

Most things that can go wrong are reversible, although some more annoying and time consuming to fix, the only thing that I know that will perm brick are messing up radio flashes but usually theres no need to change it anyway.

And to answer the earlier question, S-Off means you have disabled NAND security, giving you read/write access to all of the internal storage from the android OS, including the system partition where the ROM lives. This makes it easy to uninstall junk like the Stocks app, and of course allows you to erase vital system components if you are careless :)

Its main use is that it allows you to resize your internal storage partitions. This means that if you use a smaller ROM you can shrink the system partition (where the ROM lives), freeing up more space for user apps and data. It also lets you easily change your recovery, and provides a safer way of updating the radio.

Have a look at the root memory FAQ for details (and fastboot FAQ for the other stuff I mention).

In principle flashing a corrupt bootloader could also be fatal, since you'd need a working bootloader to fix the problem (either via fastboot or a PB99IMG). That's why you always check the md5 before flashing a new hboot.

Otherwise yes, most problem are just annoyances. Just make sure you have all of your backups ready before changing things (nandroid before flashing ROMs or any changes to the ROM, Titanium backup before wiping, and back up messages and call logs too). Do all of that and you can recover from pretty much anything without data loss.
