Rooting phone?

Hello guys!

I have been hearing my friends did something to their phones called Rooting it or something like that.. And i heard it makes ur pphone batery last longer and it will be loading applications faster and many more good features..

am not that good with android phones and i realy do wish to learn more about it so could some one here tell me more about Rooting or what its called and i have a Samsung Galaxy S and is there some roots for this phone if there is then which one do i want?

Thanks very much for theese links to topics.. But they don't realy answear what it rooting and what is the benefits.

Then do a search of the forum using the word rooting.

This is rooting in a nutshell.

Giving yourself root, or superuser (admin) access, giving you access to system files and the ability to change things that normally are marked read only

This allows you to change all kinds of things that normally you wouldn't be able to, along with install custom versions of Android.
