first thing... do i need a card reader to root my phone?
im new to all this but want to root my phone so i can clear off some of the crap that came already installed on the phone.
after reading a few things on here, it says i need a card reader before i can make a gold card. is this true?

Hello there MrLarner - check this thread out... http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/354749-how-root-install-custom-rom-desire-hd.html

It is a thread with all of the useful links for rooting a DHD. You don't HAVE to have a card reader, but I found it useful.

If you need any help, give us a shout!! :D

thanks for the quick reply, i've already got that page up on a different tab, but i have a branded handset so i need to creat a goldcard, but to creat a goldcard, its telling me i need a card reader.
any chance you could explain how i would do this without 1?

sorry my bad, i've just noticed i was reading how to creat a gold card for the htc desire, and not the HD, so i've not found the correct page.
but its now saying i need a spare micro sd card (which i dont have either).
so is this rooting a NO NO for me?
    or can it be done?

You don't HAVE to have a card reader... you only need it if you are using HEX to edit when making the goldcard - the other method (using the goldcard tool for the PC actually creates the goldcard while the SD card is IN the phone.

It is the correct page (think it actually says in El Presidente's thread that the method has been tested as working (by me incidently) on the DHD, even though it says it's for the Desire)... I've replied to your PM to explain a bit further... come back to me if you need help! :)

I do not think there were any issues with that build (highlighted from your original post). As you are on Vodaphone, I am guessing you have a branded handset - you would need to create a goldcard (also explained in the thread I linked towards the top of this thread) - http://androidforums.com/desire-hd-all-things-root/354749-how-root-install-custom-rom-desire-hd.html

you dont need to have a space micro sd card, but you will need 1.

the reason they say spare is because it will need to be formatted, and most people arent happy to do this. However, if you backup the music, photos, videos etc. on your micro-sd card then there is no reason that you cant use that to make the goldcard, and then continue to use it as data storage after rooting + flashing. this is what i have done, and have had no problems with. (although i did forget to backup my music first).

    hope this helps
