Root rooting

I already have 2.2 on my droid x and im wondering how to root
my phone and what would be the advantages besides being able
to over and underclock the phone. And I have no idea with all the terminology
you guys use so try and use plain english. Thanks

You can use wireless tether without the surcharge. You can kill the google ads on your phone. You can put custom themes (colors and stiff) and roms (android with or without motorola's blur or Verizon's forced programs (bloat)) on your phone.

The downside is that you will void your warranty. Of course, if you need to take the phone back for any reason, you can always hide root by reinstalling a non-rooted 2.2.

also when i open the superuser app theres nothing there it just says superuser permissions and the rest is just a black screen. is it supposed to be like that?

Yes, when you add an app that requires root acess it will ask for access, click yes. The SU app really doesn't do anything, it shows that you have access to the ROOT of the phone, you can change things, you are the administrator, a sort of god, not THE God, just a god. You can actually have root access without a SU icon, the icon is downloadable from the market, but just having it does not give you SU access, if that makes any sense.
