Samsung Galaxy S3, model GT-18190N, Build JZO54K.18190NXXAMG1 I bought my phone on Amazon, and my service provider is Consumer Cellular on AT&T system. I only use the phone occasionally for internet/data, but no voice or text. I was trying to get lower rates by avoiding the major phone companies. But now I have discovered that the phone is an international version, and hence an orphan regarding service. Samsung America won't talk to me, and I didn't buy the phone from AT&T. The Android OS version is 4.1.2 and I would like to upgrade to 4.3 or later. When I check for updates the reply is that I have the latest. I have found online some instructions for manually updating the international version. But one of the first steps is to "root" the phone. What are the advantages and disadvantages of a rooted phone? Is there an easier way to accomplish the update? Thanks. PS__I'm hoping the update will fix a problem with Playstore, which cannot download new apps or update old apps.
