I would have thought the bigger the better for photo retouching: so much easier to see those individual pixels ;)

On the other hand, my missus has the 10" iPad and she claims it's a little too big for portability. Having said that, she used the same excuse to trade her 13" Mac for an Air. Being an iPhan (aka iDiot), she's now thinking of also getting a mini for travel

Would she like to throw some of the cash shes wasting my way instead!? :p

I'm thinking 8" because portability and cheaper, but then 10.1" for canvas!

I am not sure just what 8" your posting about, but I have the Tab2 8" also a 10.1 note. and the 10.note has a much faster processor, and you quickly notice this item when scrolling through web pages. So i would check the speed of the processor in the 8" you thinking about. Myself i seldom ever use my 8" because it's so slow.:(

Note 8.0 is just like a big phone, I played with it and did not like it at all. Neither a phone nor a tablet.

The Note 10.1 (to me) has the better value. Larger screen, double the internal storage, rear camera flash and cascading windows. The only drawback is it's size (not easily portable and can cause fatigue on the arms if working on it without a desk) and proprietary 30-pin connector for the accessories (requiring some new accessories for the tablet; like MHL, USB OTG).

PPI really means nothing unless you are going to stick your face close to the screen. If you work a good distance off the screen, you won't notice any difference between the 8" and 10.1".

If someone can't hold a Samsung Galaxy 10.1 note, without suffering fatigue on their arms, maybe they need to visit a local gym and get stronger arms.

I have both Notes. After holding the 10.1 for more than about 30 minutes for an extended period of time without shifting it around, it makes my elbow hurt a bit. So, extended usage goes to the 8.

Buy a case that has a stand built-in, problem solved.

Not to be rude, holding required, not setting it down.

been using 10" tablets for over 2 years now and being a small and rather not strong guy I have not had a problem holding it for hours. There are so many ways to do it n a different way.

Cross your legs, then set your tab on your knee.... Problem solved. :D

I own the 2014 10.1 and a Nexus 7 and thought I might want to sell the N7 and get the Note 8, but can't say I need either. I also wanted the new Transformer, but instead picked up the 10.1, but miss the keyboard dock. Guess I need to re-establish the difference between "wants" and "needs". :D

I see the 10.1 has only 149 PPI. And some high end tablets have like 300 PPI. Will PPI make a huge difference in reading experience? Or PPI is just a gimmick term to confuse people.?

More of a gimmick. The greater the PPI, the more sharper the image will be since more pixels are crammed into the inch. However, you won't notice that unless you expect to put your face close up to the device. PPI is negated with distance. You will only notice it if you will be staring close to the screen.

I have the original note 10.1, and for taking notes yes you want this device to take notes. I couldnt imagine taking notes on a 8 in device, but it is possible.

So is the new note 10.1? If so the Tab S3 is better and faster. I had the 2013 note 10.1 and it had a case and it was easier to carry around than my laptop

Well the Tab S3 is about 4 years newer than the Note 10.1, so there would be something badly wrong if it wasn't faster.

This thread is from 2013, so the S3 wasn't an option then ;)
