Is there any way to save to the SD card, such as pictures taken with camera, or does everything go to the internal storage and then have to be manually transferred to the SD card?

Your internal storage is only for apps, when you take pics and save them they are automatically added to your SD. You should have a folder created on your SD for each app that stores pics, music, ringtones or whatever.
