Help saving numbers to phone?

Hi all, this is my first post so please be kind!!

I have a really simple problem (I think) Just changing from Orange to GiffGaff so need to save all my contacts to phone before changing sim card but can't for the life of me see how to do it!!!
Please help - but in really plain english!!!!

In HTC people app, there should be an export option. menu > Export I think

Then you import them again. You can import them as phone, but you would have a much greateer advantage if you imported them as google contacts.
