Samsung ATIV Q Windows 8/Android tablet could be called due to patent issues | SamMobile
I tweeted that the other day when it was mentioned in the Q forum over at tablet pc review. They broke the story back then and everyone in the media has joined the bandwagon in reposting the story. And although the source is coming from a korean site, it is never really determined if it is cancelled or being delayed due to the patent issues.
Now lets throw the following into the mix.
1-Since then I found that there have been 3 previously issued patents on dual OS capability. One for a 65 year old computer hobbyist back in 2003, one to Microsoft in 2011 and one to Lenovo recently this past August.
Now since the source does not determined which patents are in question, I really can't tell if any of these three previously issued patents are the ones that is delaying the Q's deployment.
2-If indeed it is a dual OS patent issue, then how is it that other brands are able to sell (or about to sell) their dual OS tablet/laptop hybrids?
Granted, those other brands don't do the dual OS like Samsung is doing or as quick. But still it makes you wonder.
3-Microsoft as one of the patent holders mentioned above in # 1, also has a knack for holding numerous cross-licensing patent deals that give them tons of money from Android itself. (ironic isn't it).
It may very well be that they are negotiating the royalty on a patent that Samsung has no way to get out of or do on their own.
4-In reference to # 1 & 3 above, Samsung did sign a cross-licensing deal with MS on Android back in 2011. So maybe its something else patent-wise not in those previous agreements or a patent issue with another brand.
5-Samsung, while removing all occurrences of the Q on their website does still mention it in some places.
On Facebook they continue to state they are in the process of availability of the Q. On their Phillipines website all mentions of the Q are still there.
Bottom line, aside from any more or different disturbances in the force that have not been mentioned, I still believe that Samsung will bring the Q to market. If it is a patent issue, I feel assured that they will sign the deal. Mainly because the Q is a device that needs to be and should be sold. It gives Samsung a device that is unlike any other and gives Microsoft the ability to get Win 8 into more hands.
DellI read that Samsung and Microsoft are indeed in negotiations about the Dual OS
"Patent issues" could mean a lot more than just dual operating system technology.
I hope you're right, ts. Even though some things have come up, preventing me from really looking at buying this upon release, I still have my heart set on a dual-OS laptop replacement, when the time comes.
Supposedly Samsung is showing off the Q (a non-production version) what ever that means at IFA in Berlin. If true, then that would indicate that it will be produced. They wouldn't show it again if it wasn't.
I guess we will find out in a few days.
Looks like it is "not this year"... so sad.
Samsung ATIV Q Windows and Android hybrid tablet won’t launch this year | SamMobile
Like I mentioned over at tabletpcreview, I doubt Samsung will just let this device die, its way too unique even with the onslaught of new devices like the Trio, Duo, Flip etc that are hitting IFA.
2014, 3 months away and places us in CES. In a way (for me) this is good, since it gives me more time to save up more for the updated device.
