Ever irritated by rummaging through your business cards collection just for one contact? Does it sound cool if some app helps manage your cardholder? Well, actually there are several business card recognition apps for Android phones. If you are looking for one of the best if not the best of this type of app, you might be interested in ScanCard business card reader.

When I try out ScanCard, first of all I am delighted that it recognizes my cards as well as if not better than its competitors, such as CamCard, or WorldCard. Accurate result put at the right place, thus I barely need additional typo, yep, quite a neat solution. Until now, I know that I should test more before confirming its accuracy. A little bit surprised by figuring out that it supports ?Recognize-all? mode as well. 20 card images previously captured, one click, done in one minute and half. Honestly, it does quite a good job, few errors, once again. However I have to point out that the application cannot yet detect card language type, as one of its competitors CamCard does. Thus, I have to switch languages manually among 3 modes, English, English/Chinese, and European languages.

Another feature of ScanCard I appreciate a lot is its search functionality. It can not only search by name, but also by any keyword hidden in the card, as company name, address, even job title. I am pretty sure that many other?Mr. Forgetful? like me would be happy with this function, knowing that any slightest clue could be helpful.

One more detail that might deserve a mention is that you can choose to show either contact list or tiny card images in your cardholder. It looks more like a gadget feature but I find it lovely. ?Thumbnail? mode just gives me an impression of skimming through a photo reel. If there is something to improve, I would say that it would be nice to have categories for different contacts.

Last but not least, I would like to enumerate some utilities of ScanCard which could possibly facilitate the life, like sharing a business vCard or image with someone else by Email, making a quick call by just one click upon the contact, linking to the contact?s website, even a map location service according to the contact?s address. I would rather say that?s kind and helpful, but not a novelty, since many others like WorldCard do the same.
Some more information for those who stick around. ScanCard has different versions according to languages. If you business a lot in China as well, you might need a ?Chinese + European languages? version ($8.99), otherwise the one for European languages could be a good choice ($5.99). Besides, all the ScanCard products have a Lite version available from Android Market for free. After all, I think that ScanCard deserves a trial thanks to its high accuracy and simple use.

Just checked it out Saturday and played for a while during the weekend. As you said, it does quite well its job, correct recognition, and almost no typo needed. a note-worthy, the support team reacts pretty fast, even in weekend:D, paid Saturday morning and hours later got the licence number for app. Quite impressive, appreciated it a lot. Above all, thank you for advice. :)

Actually, concerning the topic "ScanCard vs Google Goggles", here you go some comments from Mr. Greg Knieriemen, hopefully that could be helpful for your choice.
"...While I like the ScanCard Business Card Reader app which also captures business card contact information, Goggles is far more versatile." (source The Absolute Top 10 Android Apps... Today - iKnerd)

I just tried it on one card. Several mistakes that required correction. It was probably a little faster than entering the info manually. I'll try it on additional cards in case the one I did was just difficult for some reason although the text was very clear on it.

Tried Goggles since that was brought up and it was terrible, didn't get much of anything right.

Hi jackrock, none of BCR solutions is 100% perfect for recognition accuracy. That depends on several parameters, like characters definition, color contrast, luminosity around, even camera cleaness could affect. By far, the most mature BCR solution powered by OCR technology could reach around 95% accuracy.

Hope that could help you. And what about your further test? We are looking forward to your feedback.

Well, use for 3 months or so yet on my newly bought Samsung Galaxy S, nearly clean out all my paper cards. :) Indeed, sometimes it makes mistakes of characters, especially in bad luminosity conditions, as told above. But most of the time, it does a good job. helps save a lot of time. Nowadays, I am more concerned with how to synchronize my ScanCard contacts with other solutions, like "exchange" for example. Anybody ever had the same need? eager to learn of. Thanks for the idea.

Hi Gaby, thanks for the participation to the discussion. Currently our app does not yet support "Exchange" synchronization. We are evaluating the market needs to add this option, thus your feedback interest us a lot.

We are taking advantage of this discussion to announce an important issue. Until last Thursday, 06/09/2011, our apps were suffering from a strange "missing from Android Market" issue, on mobile phones with Android OS 2.2. And we notice that the issue in China mainland in particular. Finally, we succeeded to resolve the problem, and now they are available again. Sorry for any occasional inconvenience and you could also refer to the article we wtire on our company blog to find for more details, hoping that could help someone who has the same worry.

Hi guys, we are happy to announce here that we have released ScanCard FREE VERSION (instead of previous lite version) on Android Market.

You would be able to capture images, recognize and save limitless cards. The service is also cloud-based, which means your cards are backed up on the cloud service as well. Then you will be free to manage your contacts anywhere at anytime. The only constraint is that you need a web synchronization account, which is free charge as well, to use the solution.

By far, we are the only “100% free” business card reader working on Android OS, which recognizes Chinese, English and other European languages, with a real performant OCR (Optical Character Recognition) engine, accuracy up to 95%+++. Compared to most cloud-based solutions, with ScanCard you are getting the recognized contact information immediately after capturing the business card's image, no need to wait days and hours before getting it on hand.
