Overall it's been working pretty well. However, there are some problems. For one thing, some of the titles have no covers or have pathetically useless excuses for them, for instance
    test
    test.
What the heck is that and how do I fix it? It shouldn't be too difficult to find and import the proper covers. I bet it's harder to fix sideways presentations or vertical instead of horizontal. Also, I have had at least one that doesn't show up in Nook but I can open and read it with Nook FROM THE DOWNLOAD LIST ONLY. What is up with that?

its a nook. it is poor programming. i sold nooks at BNN a while ago.....so i have seen the crappy development they have.

are these books, nook books? or just ebooks from other sources?

I guess most of them are from elsewhere. It can handle pdf and epub, right? What else can it do? I'm guessing not chm.

Not all ebooks have covers, e.g. if you download from Project Gutenberg they don't usually add a cover to a book that has been uploaded (and let's face it, they are doing out of copyright books but for all I know the cover from a print edition, which is not the work of the author but of the publisher, may have a different copyright status, so digitising that may not be an option). If that's the case it's nothing to do with Nook, they'd appear the same on any reader.

I personally don't care much about covers with eBooks - I tend to use text-based library lists rather than graphical "bookshelves", and of course when you pick up an electronic reader you don't see the cover the way you do with a physical book, so I rarely notice the covers anyway.

However I have no specific experience with Nook - I've used various third-party ebook readers on Android and a physical Kindle (which has WiFi permanently off and where I sideload all books, after format conversion and, where necessary, DRM removal, from a computer. My attitude is that I don't feel that owning a particular e-reader should mean I have to buy from that company's store, nor should the company get to monitor what I'm reading. It's just a display device for me).

I totally agree about the display device. Actually, most of the content I have is third party. I can use a nongraphical list but I like the convenience of being able to group "books" on "shelves" and while their content is far more important than their appearance, it does save time. The problem is that some of the covers or noncovers are almost useless. What good does it do to have one that says test test when it's actually about quantum physics? I suppose it could qualify as a test of the reader's patience. Meanwhile, I have downloaded other readers and been able to use them with varying degrees of success. For instance, Moon+Reader works mostly well and Readler is sort of ok, but DjVu Reader and Orion Viewer are apparently not even recognized. It's strange that they show up as apps but when it comes to "open with", items from my download list are not given them as choices. I would like to get FullReader but something (I don't know what) prevents that.

Which nook do you have? I got one of the old ones and rooted it way back in 2012 or so. I gave mine away but I wouldn't expect any Nook to be capable of doing much nowadays.

That's funny. I actually downloaded the app for Android. It's 5.4.0.16. I know it can do pdf and epub, but how about anything else? Of course there's always a chance of a corrupted file, for instance that download I have not been able to open with anything. How do I get this phone to make use of Orion Viewer and/or DjVu Reader? As I mentioned, they're listed in apps but that's about it.

Why would this Moto G try to open universal book reader (I think that's its official name) with Moon+Reader or Readler? If anything, I would expect APKPure to handle that. I have the same problem with DjVu Reader and Orion Viewer. How do I make this crazy thing open stuff the right way?

I decided to call Barnes and Noble. I was very lucky and got answers fast, from an actual English speaker. Unfortunately, they weren't the answers I wanted. Apparently it is not possible to import covers and they currently support only pdf and epub. Is there some way to translate djvu and cbr/z, for instance, to these formats? The other question I have is about crossfiling. What I mean is that some books could fit in more than one category on the shelves. Maybe one title could qualify as science and biography, for example. I know that in the real world probably the only way would be to have two copies, one each for two real shelves, but I would think that through the magic of electronics that would be doable with ereading.

first off do not expect much as far as categorizing or keeping things organized within the nook world....such terminology does not exists to them. it is just like most things where they have a "my way or the highway" mentality.

secondly i googled for you "djvu to epub" and found this:
    https://convertio.co/djvu-epub/

and i found this for cbz:

Have I been reschnooked? Last night I was using Nook and found that many of my titles had apparently disappeared. I still have way more than not, but what happened to those? Do I have to redownload them? I thought of signing out but that would evidently involve redownloading anyway.

They are still in the download list. I just redid them all by hand. I don't know why it would mess up this way. At least they should all be safe on sd, which is where they are.

I agree that Nook is somewhat problematic but I don't want to go with amazon. Is there any way to fix (some of) the covers? Most are ok but some are back instead of front while others are blank or have
    text
text. What good does that do?

I especially like that djvu to epub converter, or at least I will if it works. How exactly do I use it? It almost sounds as if it would be for computers, which I don't have.

Well, I've got another weird problem. This time the downloads are somehow interlinked maybe. Yesterday my first one was called dtoken rather than the name of the book. When I went to download the second it asked if I wanted to open, replace, keep both, or cancel. It turns out that keep both was the right choice as it then provided the second file. It went on this way, dtoken this and that, sometimes with a number. At least it mentioned if a particular file was pdf or epub. This morning I tried signing out of the site and then in again, but it was doing the same thing. Now it is putting the wrong cover from the right title on a different one or no cover at all. I called Barnes and Noble and was told the best thing was to uninstall and reinstall the app. Would that fix this or is it something else? I don't really want to go to that trouble if it wouldn't help.

i doubt that it will fix it. that is their answer for everything.....like i said that app is a piece of crap......just get used to being let down with it and except that nothing will ever run perfect.
