Help Screen lights up and turns off while locked

I just bought the Galaxy S3 with AT&T the other day and I'm new to Android so don't know much about it. My problem is whenever I lock my phone, after about 10 seconds, the screen will light up and after about 10 seconds the screen shuts off, then after about 10 seconds it lights up again. This whole process repeats it self. I don't know how to fix it but it's REALLY annoying when you have you phone next to you and your screen keeps turning on and off while it's locked. Can anyone PLEASE help me? Thanks!

I do have Android version 4.0.4

That is unusual. Are you running any sort of apps in the background?

I swear I had this same issue when i first got my phone. Turning off Smart Stay fixed it.

I know the phone turns it's screen on when the battery charges to 100%. Some apps can turn the phone's screen on as well.
