Screen not as responsive when not in hand?

Is it just me or is the screen not as responsive when it's on the table?

Table:
- I swipe left or right and sometimes it works
- Pull notification curtain down, not a prayer
- tapping icons, works sometimes

In hand:
- everything is fine

Anyone else experience this?

Edit: oddly enough, I'd try to swipe down the notification curtain and nothing works BUT if I touch any part of the phone (sides, not screen) it works. Weird
