Help Screen problem on brand new desire

Got a HTC Desire this afternoon for my daughter. We waited the 4 hours as advised by chap at Orange shop before switching on. The phone's screen remains locked and cannot be unlocked. The image you are meant to drag down to unlock does not move. Have tried replacing the battery but this hasn't helped. I cannot reset or do anything with this phone. Am I just unlucky in having a dud phone.

When you "replaced" the battery, did the phone reset?

I guess so as the firework display started and the HTC logo came up. It then went to the screen with note for scroll down to open. But alas so such luck with opening again. Frustrating.

you must go back to the shop and ask for replacement ....

Sounds like the digitizer is faulty. Though how this could have got through QC is a mystery.
Return for replacement (NOT repair).

As said above, Bad digitizer or digitizer cable... Get it replaced

Given a replacement today. New phone up and running and surprisingly good. Slightly jealous of my daughter as it puts my oldie iPhone to shame!
