Help Screen Replacement, D.I.Y.

ifixit.com has a teardown procedure for the Nexus 5 here:
https://www.ifixit.com/Teardown/Nexus+5+Teardown/19016

If you read through it, you will see toward the end of the procedure that the LCD and glass are fused to the front panel to make a single, permanent, assembly. If you have broken glass, you will have to replace that assembly. I hope this helps.

Just for a datapoint, I just had mine done by LG. It was $155 bucks, and took about 10 days. That did not include the cost of shipping to LG, which I used 2 day, cost about 30 bucks. Painful, but I still have my warranty (2 year, since I used AMEX to pay for phone). I had to ship it to fort worth, tx. I took a day for it to get in the system, a day for it to be evaluated (after getting notified, I paid over the phone), and a day to get fixed. It was shipped back slowly (5 days), I don't know if there is an option for a faster return shipment.

I got a new upper bezel, screen/digitizer (I really shattered it). I also bought a clear spigen ultra hybrid case, which I'm pretty sure would have prevented it from breaking, as it landed screen side down on concrete.

For another datapoint, it looks like you can get the display+digitizer assembly online for about $110 if you opt to do it yourself.

Nice, i didn't find that screen. I found a couple, but based upon reviews, I questioned if they were really oem. This one looks good.

The other downside of sending it in was that the phone was wiped to factory state, when I got it fired up, I had to reapply 4.4.4

The last AMEX card I had (it's been a while) covered accidental damage, too, I had a digital camera that a friend sat on and I had to send it in. I was out just the shipping costs. Perhaps that has changed with the advent of smartphones and their ease of damage.

holy****, it never occurred to me to see if it added accidental damage. I will check that out, never know! Tx!

My N5 is a backup device - and I managed to shatter the screen. It still recognizes touches, so I think the digitizer may still be functional.

I'm not going to pay LG $150 to get it replaced - willing to take a chance and try it myself - Would something like this suffice? http://www.ebay.com/itm/Google-Nexu...213300?hash=item2c77210374:g:we4AAMXQfvlSjUPK
or http://www.ebay.com/itm/LCD-Display...271011?hash=item2c9db254a3:g:vSQAAOSw6btXQrbD
$25-$30

Worth a shot - though I might opt for the first link, as the second doesn't seem to know what they're selling:
High quality digitizer assembly with frame for Asus Google Nexus 5
