When using the Google Maps even in car mode the screen still times out.

Best I can do is set the timeout for 30 minutes but I do not like that solution, often it takes me longer then that to get where im going and i dont want to have to switch the phone back on in the middle of driving.

I have used HTC phones for years and the screen timeout always did not apply when using GPS.

Also, is there any way to get the map to rotate to the direction of travel like tomtom and garmin do?

Have a look in the market for the free widget "Toggle Screen Timeout" - it'll stop your screen switching off.

& "Quick Settings" appears to have a never timeout setting: It also allows easy flipping of ringer, WiFi, Mobile Data, GPS, Volume, AirPlane, Auto-sync, bluetooth, auto-rotate....

    Cheers!

I second Quick Settings - love it (mainly for adjusting brightness from the notifications tray).

Thanks "Toggle Screen Timeout" works great.

Quick Settings is useful too, but it doesn't seem to let you turn the timeout off, its just shortcuts to the already existing menus.

I use Quick Settings as a shortcut on the notifications pull-down. Tap on that and you get a customisable list of settings.
For screen timeout you can either use a toggle between on and off or click on the label to select from a variety of timeout lengths.
