Screw the OTA, why don't you ROOT?

Alright, so I've been wondering for forever and a half, why's everyone on 1.5 so ADAMANT that OTA is the way to go?

I got a refurb yesterday after having prematurely leaked (before root was found) and am now running a custom ROM. Having been on V3 leak, which is being said is almost identical to the OTA, root blew me away.

So what're your reasons?

-Fear of bricking? (There's an Eris Master App that'll pretty much root your phone for you, no command lines necessary. Easy)

-Fear of missing out on future updates? (Root is reversible)

-Love the feeling of "official" software? (I guess I can't argue this one, but hey, enjoy your bugs)


So, fill me in.

No bugs on my stock 1.5, although I've seen some postings here with buggy stock 1.5s.

I've read of many on all leak versions, as well as people with root.

You've got an agenda, that's ok, but included in it is a (false) notion that what you're doing is the best thing to do and that those who are not doing it are lesser than you.

That wrecks the credibility of your questions, in my opinion.

I would put these people in the same category as those that say they don't need swype...
If you haven't tried it... you dont know what you're missing :D

I was referring to the bugs in 2.1 v3, but I'm sure having a useless YouTube app isn't considered a bug (in 1.5). In my opinion, the added usability of root surpasses the bugs included.

Also, just to add, I now know that people who've OTA'd can still root. Guess it'll always be an option?

I didn't know what to do with my phone when my swype trial period ended this morning, I google'd it and it took me back here, I apparently was not the only one. The stock keyboard looks terrible and is terrible, I need swype! I've been using it since it was released, I can't go back now :D

Ok then, tell us exactly why someone who uses the phone for calls, internet, email, some apps, weather, and GPS would want or need root? What would they gain and at what cost? Now remember, you're talking to an average user not a geek.

I recently went from 1.5 to Manually installing 2.1 OTA.. is there a way to go back to 1.5 and then root, or should I just root, and how would I go about rooting??

Yeah, what he said. All this talk of rooting has made me curious...I know that, I, a non techy droid owner would love to know what all this is about.......and I haven't found a good explanation.

I was obviously referring to the people here on the boards who tend to have some interest in the techy-side of their phones (if not, why would they post here? :D ) The average user doesn't even know what software version they're running or hell, if their phone's even on "Android". These people are missing out on more than just root.

Just wifi tethering for me is more than enough reason to root.

Other things like live wallpapers, even overclocking are not necessary.

Edit: For those that don't know...
I can turn on wifi tethering and anyone around me with a laptop, or even an iTouch/iPad can get only using my internet connection

How did you go about getting the refurb? I'm running v3 and have ben on the leaks since the original leak. With the root being found the next week did not make me happy. I want root always have.

Dialer lag? Silent phone calls?

I didnt root simply because I was still familiarizing myself with my new phone. Coming from the Verizon Voyager to the HTC Eris was a huge jump in functionality. Rooting just wasnt a priority for me. I did however save a list of threads relating to the subject for when the time came but last night I noticed the messaage to recieve update and I went with it. I was impressed that all my apps remained, contacts stayed, heck all Ive had to do was redo my home screens again. So far so good.

I gotta say im loving this phone and I loved it so much we got one for my GF too. I was really hesitant to purchase this phone in the beginning because of the Data fee but you know what? TOTALLY WORTH THE PRICE!!!!! I cant say it enough. This phone makes every phone I have had before it look like a worhtless pieces of junk.

So... Does tethering use your 3G connection and basically just make your phone a hotspot? Sounds cool actually...

So far, no silent phone calls. The dialer is slightly snappier than v3, but I'm sure it depends on the ROM (I'm running senseable).

My phone was doing this thing where it would randomly scroll to the far left home screen. It was pissing me off and I was considering reflashing the v3 leak, but decided this was my chance to get refurb.

I would root the minute I had the chance, but it's not what everyone is looking for. My girlfriend could care less and, like stated above, doesn't even know what Android is. She's not stupid...it's just not her priority. She likes all the cool things I show her but there are just a few features that she uses regularly.

While you and I want bleeding edge technology and screwing around with our phones, others just want the official features to work. Every time we install a leaked version, we are taking a risk. Some would rather not play that game.
